Supplying your own oil - Downside?

Since I have been unable to wean OPC Swindon off their money grabbing habit of charging double for engine oil compared to what it can be bought for online (Land Rover are just as bad), I'm wondering if there is any downside to supplying your own, such as a pissy comment in the service record or some such which might cause an inrush of air through clenched teeth come resale time.

I know it's only an £80 saving on the £1600+ bill for a 4 year service on a 997 Gen 2 turbo (including a number of "recommendations" which I will likely decline), but I don't like being taken for a ride.

Seems like every time I take a car in for service, I get a laundry list of things which "need" doing. Just waiting for them to tell me it needs new brake discs, pads and front radiators...

What are your thoughts people, or am I just being tight?

I supply my own oil without a problem. I think you need to discuss it with your service manager in the first instance.

As I understand it, some will co-operate others won't.

Regards,

Clive.

Hi

I too supply my own oil ( Costco on offer! ) and never had a problem with my OPC.

Cheers

Thank you, I have a letter from them after the last service when I complained about the 100%+ markup. They told me they were prevented by Porsche from reducing the price (much as though they wanted LOL). I told them that was anti-competitive and a restrictive business practice so they then said I could bring my own. I will take a copy of the letter to wave under their noses...

I have been supplying my own oil for years. Invoice always states that customer supplied own oil. Only caveat is they will only use it provided is approved grade/viscosity.

Cambridge OPC were in agreement for me to supply my own oil but when I questioned cost x savings it was only going to save me £7 given the 'reduced' service pricing for 996 so I didn't bother......

Yes, it's interesting how older cars get reduced service costs, an attempt to keep them in the dealer network.

Don't forget the club discount on both parts and labour my OPC are fine with that as well and I always supply my own oil. I got a good deal last time from halfords.

I supplied my own oil at Cardiff OPC which are part of the same dealership as Swindon. I requested an interim oil change on my 987 Boxster rather than the 2 year / 20k mileage intervals. Cost for OPC to do the oil change - £253, cost when I supplied oil - £45+VAT. Costco Mobil 1 at under £60 for 10 litres, happy days. Worked out at £114 vs £253 plus I still got the stamp in the book!

Admittedly it was at the same time as I had the spark plugs & drive belt done but always found them (so far....) to be open to negotiation on price to a certain extent.

Supplied my own for my Cayman S but only caveat was that it had to be in unopened containers so couldn't use the part opened 5L that I use for top-ups.
