Suspected CV joint gone

The noise has returned. I've not used the car much this year for various reasons. Anyway, she was MNOT'd last week and used it one day. Then yesterday I went to the Tatton Sports and Classic car show aand half way there, about 6 miles, the noise came back. Funny though, when I drove on the grass it didn't make the noise but on rough roads it sounded dreadfull, clicking and creeking (also more pronounced when changing direction. Anyway, I got it home and took off the rear OS wheel. When turning it, it can be fine but then stops. With more pressure it moves past this with a click. THis happens most of the time. The thing is, there's spacers on the car and I couldn't remove them so didn't take the hub apart last night as I need a deep 19mm socket to remove the spacers. There doesn't seem to be any play in the wheel. Both times it has occurred has been after the car has stood. Does this sound like a CV joint? It's definitely coming from the hub so I think it must be CV joint or wheel bearing. Can't quite see the CV boot sso can't tell if it's split. Anyway, if anyone has had one go and could give me some pointers that would be great. Hope to have the hub apart mid week. I remember CV joints on my Mini sounding like this when they had gone! If you remember with a Mini the test was to drive it in reverse with full lock.
It sounds as it what grease is in your cv joint is drying up and therefore not lubricating as it should, this is going to lead to more wear so I would get them checked out or at the very least pack some more grease in which will help if not cure.
Sorry, I dont know the test for 911 cv joints.

I think you might be right. Unfortunately I thought I'd give it some stick briefly downa country lane to see if that would shift the noise. Hopefully I haven't caused any uneccessary wear! Yep I remember the full lock mini test. It makes a very simialr but louder noise. Hopefully some new grease might help if no significant damage has been caused. Fingers crossed!

I changed the cv joints on mine and its as easy enough job with a bit of patience.

With the old joints apart and cleaned up there was a lot of groved wear on the centre spider of mine. I junked all four and replaced them with new ones from here http://www.eurocarparts.com at between £40 & £60 each depending on which model year car.

It transformed the overall feel of the transmission in my car making it much tighter and it also got rid of an annoying vibration that started at about 70 mph.

In effect the worn cv joints dont hold the driveshaft in balance and allow it to whirl creating the vibration.

The clicking you mention sounds like a dried up and seeizing cv. Definately some thing to sort out before the joint fails completely and damages the drive shaft which are a lot more expensive

Thanks for the reply Bruce. The joint that seems to have gone is the outer one, in the hub. I thought this was only available complete with the drive shaft. Is this correct? Cheers

Looking at Euro car parts my Supersport uses the 75-84 turbo parts I think. I think they are serviceable like yours. i.e. you don't need to replace the drive shaft too. Cheers
