Suspected Wheel Bearing Failure

Has anyone had any problems with a rear wheel bearing ?

I have a 986 with about 35k miles on the clock. Returning from a 3 day tour of Kerry I noticed a repetive 'whum' noise coming from the rear of the car. The noise is definately there even up to about 70 mph.

Its not drive or engine related as it does it when I dont have the drivetrain engaged - even turning off the engine and freewheeling, the noise is still there....

Its a repetitive whum whum whum noise ( sorry best way I can describe it ) and the frequency of the noise increases with speed. usualy a bearing squeels up to a certain speed doesnt it ?

Anyways, anyone else had problems with the near side rear bearing ? or god forbid - anyone got any ideas ?

I had a wheel bearing problem detected and fixed at the last (4 year) service - at about 35K miles...
It was fixed under "goodwill" as I had the warranty and the correct service schedule. (Apparrently NOT covered under the extended warranty [&:])

It might not be the bearing - you say a "whum" noise - could it be a tyre related thing?

I had a front bearing replaced for around £65 all in, ut as you say it was more of a squealing sound....the sound you mention sounds like the rear wheel might be hitting something?

I tend to agree with you Mark... I plan to get it on a lift in the morning and have a proper look. It sounds like a tyre noise but yet when I jacked up one side and ran the wheel free from the ground - the sound was still there. The first time it happened I thought I had a puncture - and I definately caught a whiff of burning rubber.

I gave the tyres the best check I had and there didnt appear to be any rubbing on the tyre. There are two brand new P-Zero's on the rear - so perhaps one of them has deformed in some way.

Hopefully the lift will tell me more tomorrow and give an indication of where the problem is. As the car wasnt bought from an OPC, i have warranty elsewhere and the garage have told me that it is a warranty item if it is a bearing. As for the tyre - I bought those from the OPC and I'm sure they will stand over them

So, couple that with the new front bumper, the RMS, the faulty digital clock, OPC damage to the car when repaiting the RMS and the damaged roof - I'm starting to think that after 6 months of troubled motoring its time to more this motor on...
