Suspension and Shocks

Hi All,

I'm In mid reconstruction of my 1970 911T and looking to upgrade the suspension.. I wont be racing it so dont need to go fully sport orientated..

Any advice on the best type of shocks and springs to buy?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

Mark, unless the suspension has been converted to coil over then there are no springs as part of the suspension. The suspension relies on torsion bars. For road use standard T torsion bars (23mm diameter?), I would suggest, are fine. However, it is probably best to ditch the 45 year old torsion bars and get fresh ones. A worthwhile improvement would be a front anti roll bar which was not a factory fit on the T. In some markets there may not have been rear ARB also. The diameter in the factory Sports Purpose manual was 15mm front and 16mm rear anti roll bars and these were a standard S fitment in 1970 I think. The biggest improvement in roadholding on my 1970 S was a set of 185 x 15" VR 70 Michelin tires (assuming you are using Fuchs 15" x 6"). Expensive but a tire which provides good wet and dry weather grip and are progressive when pushed to the limit of adhesion. It is also vital to get the suspension properly set up by a company who has the relevant experience with early 911s. Do not be tempted to lower the suspension too much. Whilst lowered suspension gives a nicer "stance" overdone very often does not improve suspension performance.

Hi Kirk,
Many thanks for the information, its a great help. Sorry for the slow response, I seem to have missed it for some reason... I will definitely look into those tyres.
Best,
Mark
