Suspension Change

Hi guys, think its time I did something with my suspension, cars 16 years old now with 55k miles, probably do with some struts and dampers etc. Whats the thinking on this now, have we moved on from MO30/33 to something more modern/better? what are you using, how ism it performing?

Car is a '96 C2 cab, lefthooker, manual, mainly road use, looking for RS type settings, so looking to change struts, dampers, arb's etc.

did you get a good deal, if so, where from.

Cheers

Just had mine done last week, changed for the Bilstein B12 kit with H&R 30mm lowering springs! No idea how it handles as the roads have been either flooded or like an ice rink since I collected it!! It was in the region of £1500 installed, replaced the rear toe arms at the same time as the bushings had start to split, that, suspension upgrade and a 6k service all for under £2k!

Probably worth looking at this earlier post

Sounds reasonable, interested in how its handling, can you say where you had the work done?

cheers Steve

Yes thanks Anton, saw that after I had posted, jumped the gun a bit there, read Maurice's techy also, but I suppose all/recent info is of interest to us all

The information I posted (in the link above) is pretty current and I'm still very pleased with the setup - car feels very well 'planted' on the road and the cornering is much better - mind you, since the springs and dampers had been in the car for 130K miles I'm not surprised!

Kinda looking at PSS10's or KW variant 3's, new arb's, top mounts, and a general refurb on control arm/drop link bushes etc, but its getting a bit frightening on the price front[:-]

I'll be interested to see how it handles myself, once the weather allows! Bushes and mounts etc were all ok on mine, actually front bushes had already been changed by someone else at some point.

Work was done by a Porsche Indy at Catterick area of N York's called Car-Tec & Care, ex OPC and RLR Engineer. Top Fella but probably a bit too North for you.

Hi

Given that your car is a C2 cabrilolet - do you not perhaps think that the RS setup may be a little bit harsh for the type of vehicle?

I know a few cabriolet owners have gone down the Koni FSD route and been very happy with the results - you do say in you post that you only intend to use it for the road?

Suspension is always a minefield on the 993 - I think you would be best trying to drive examples of each type and make up your mind based on that.

I know Gert at Carnewal is a pretty cheap supplier of a lot of the suspension components mentioned in the thread - but a lot of the expense will come from replacing top mounts for suspension (if needed) and fitment/alignment.

If you can do the work yourself then it is obviously far cheaper - there are some really good write-ups on the various 993 sites on the internet and it can all be done at home using car jacks to lift the car. I guess it depends how hands on you are - then all you have to really pay for is components and alignment post fit.

Very good point. Your choice, of course, but remember that even the standard set-up will be a damn sight better if just renewed properly[;)].

I went for KW Variant 3 a while ago - the old Monro setup was well overdue for a change. Wow - fabulous. Can't remember exactly the cost or whether it was inc or exc VAT - somewhere around £2500 at JZM.

Hi, It's going to take a bit more then a set of springs and shocks to refresh a 15year old suspension, I would advise somebody with expert knowledge looks carefully over the whole suspension to asses which parts are worn before you commit to any suspension system. I agree that kw,v3 ,pss10 is a bit extreme for a cab but it's your choice

Yes Christian, as you say it would be foolish just to chuck a set of springs and dampers at it, naturally I would change all bushes etc at the same time, and then have everything set up. Not sure I quite get the comments re the fact its a cab, what's the significance?

shell stiffness and how the hard suspension will cause it to creak and flex in an undesirable way negating half of the spring rate at the wheels.
