'evening everybody,
A couple of months ago some clunking noise in the front right suspension area developed on the S2.
At 110k miles I figured things down there were beginning to get pretty loose so I took on refreshing/replacing progressively most of the usual suspects :
Step 1 - Caster mounts replaced with 968 units
Step 2 - Rebuilt ball joints + switched back from the 30mm ARB to the original one, with all 8 new bushings (4 for the bar itself plus 4 for wishbone droplinks).
Step 3 - Upper strut mounts replaced today with solid units (Uniball)
I did test drives between any of the three steps mentioned above, and none had effect on this noise, which can be heard inconsistently :
- when driving too quickly on speed bumps. In this case the car feels like caster mounts are too loose, same feeling as with old worn out 944 caster mounts.
- when driving at speed over light bumps or potholes. In this case the car feels like the upper strut mount are loose to a point the piston of the shock hits the bonnet.
- when steering at nearly full lock (low speed manoeuvres). In this case the steering feels as if a spring that is not well seated switches back to its correct position. I checked this repeatedly and springs actually do not move one bit.
Next step is to replace the right caster mount with an old one to see if it makes any difference, but I doubt it - has there been cases of defective caster mounts ?
I am running out of ideas and feedback would be much appreciated.
Thanks.
