Suspension rattle

Jon Kent

New member
Got a small rattle on the front suspension.
Had it checked twice over the last year by a Porsche Centre & a specialist and neither found anything wrong.
Car is lowered & handling doesn't seem affected, except for understeer on enthusiastic left turns (noise on R/H front - so makes sense).
Not getting any worse really, but a little annoying.
Only does it on small bumps & sounds like a metallic bobble (loose bolt.....worn bush).
Any thoughts/smiliar experience ?

Jon

I have experienced the same noise although my car is not lowered.

I know there is something loose but exactly where, I haven't the foggiest.

Cheers

Jon,

If the noise happens over rough road surfaces while going along straight, and subsides during hard cornering, perhaps the first thing to try is the drop link that connects the wishbone to the anti-roll bar and then the anti-roll bar bushes themselves. (When cornering, the ARB and its linkages are loaded and so don't tend to rattle.)

You may be able to test it if you can get under the car with all of its weight still on the wheels - e.g. over a pit or on a ramp, bu not jacked up. Post back if you want some suggestions as to what to look for.

I have had this problem on my 964 and a handful of other cars.

I am even more convinced that it is likely to be the ARB. What milage has your car done?

Thanks for the info Alistair.
The car's done 103500kms, so about 64,000mls.
But it's certainly had an active life in the past 18mths....some great roads in Luxembourg.
I'll check the ARB, but will be limited to my own garage with it jacked up....I leave for Brands on Sat a.m.
If that's the case, it's not so urgent.
Do you know if there are facilities at the festival to get checks/basic maintenance done ??
Many thanks again,

Jon

Think I may have found it......by accident.
Was cleaning the car last night & noticed the wheel centre was loose.....tapping it made a similar noise.
Popped it out to realise that the backing collar that clips into the wheel was loose on the rivets.
A quick tap on each of the 3 rivets with a hammer & screwdriver to splay them solved the problem.
Didn't notice the noise on the bumpy road this morning, so fingers crossed.
Thanks anyway for the advice Alistair......will use it if it's not actually fixed it (seems too easy).

Rgds,
Jon
