Suspension recommendations -fast road use

The dreaded MoT today, it passed but the note at the bottom of the page says one shock is on the way out. So it's time to plan the next upgrade or replacement for the car. Want to keep the ride height and comfort level as it is, so no track only settings etc.

I wondered what the current thinking is as while I have the shocks to do I will probably get the steering looked at as well. Has anyone one on here done the Turbo arms upgrade with Bilstein shocks and firmer springs???

I'm off to the States in a couple of weeks so hope to dent the card over the pond and make use of Business Class luggage allowance!!

Cheers. Happy New Year to you all.

I hope your car's are as much fun as mine is to me!

Best ask over at http://www.impactbumpers.com as well.

I never changed the dampers on my 3.2 Club Sport, but I had it lowered by about an inch & the Turbo tie rods fitted together with a strut brace & it was great on the road (as well as the track) without compromising comfort. Russell Lewis (RSR Engineering) reckons that lowering a Carrera is the best pound for pound handling mod you can do.

The 911 carrera sport coupe came with sport (aka turbo) dampers all round.
These are marketed as Bilstein HD in the aftermarket. You can fit these to a sport car or non sport as the torsion bars & arb's are the same. I would reccomend these to you.
The Bilstein Sports in the aftermarket are supposed to be approx 40% stiffer and are no good unless you also uprate the torsion bars and possibly the arb's.

You should note that the sport spec dampers (inserts for front & dampers for the rear) will fit either the carrera or the turbo cars.
I hear these sport/turbo dampers (aka Bilstein HD's in the aftermarket) are only 10% stiffer than the non sport dampers and afaik the non sport dampers are not availabe in the aftermarket.
My factory dampers are green and I think the aftermarket replacements of the same spec (HD's) are yellow.

Take a look on Pelican Parts in the USA.

I would get a quote from Berlyn Services here in the UK & ImagineAuto in the USA as well as Pelican.

Oh, I have those turbo tie rods too, they are great for a sport car.

You can see in my sig I have sport coupe as well as a turbo.

My 3.2's were both 'sports' and I found the suspension great for fast road. Can't comment on the non-sport.
By comparison my standard 965 shocks were aweful so had to go 'sports'.

Hi Nigel,
Judging by your picture you have asport model and there ore the Bilstein dampers. This is good news as Bilstien In Leicester can rebuild/revalve the front inserts to any bump and rebound figure you like.
If you car is a G50 gearbox car it will have the same suspension as the 930 so pretty stiff with bigger torsion bars and arb's.
If this is the case I would add turbo tie rods, get the front srtuts revalaved for about £150 each to standard specification and replace the rears with new standard ones.
Then get in lowered as much as you can bear. After this the car will be top draw. I have just done this on my 915 gearboxed car and it is a revalation.
Kind regards Ian

A few years ago I got RUF to put their fast road/track suspension on the car, result MEGA transformation. Consisted of sl bigger antiroll bars and their spec shocks and geometry setup, all corner weighted and set to perfection, gave a 993 a run for its money.
Sadly [prob for sale this year

The posts here suggest that Sport models were fitted exclusively with Bilstein dampers.

Not so - Sports were also fitted with Boge dampers.

Strange, I have one of the very early 3.2 cars and mine are all green Bilsteins. They look the same as my '81 turbo.

Bilsteins are the way to go.

That's good info, thanks. I'm going to guess and say it must have been when money was tight as the company were not making much money during those later 3.2 years. They also skimped badly on the 993 dampers.

Update!

US customs took great offence at my Bilsteins and took them out of my luggage!!!
So I will end up ordering from here anyway and it will still be a while until I get them on the car. I have to say Pelican were very good to deal with and had the parts in my hotel in under 18 hours from time of order.

Thanks for all the replies,I'll let you know how we get on.

Roll on the drier weather!

Hi Nigel were your parts in hand luggage when coming threw U.S. customs? was hopping to get suspention parts shocks and a clutch back! have a 40 kg allowance! Regards Berny.

No they were checked into the hold in a golf carrybag with my clubs etc!
Customs left a small note and didn't replace the lock, so guess what, no driver or 3 wood in London!!
