Suspension replacement

Hello chaps

I've not been on here for a while so hope you are all well. Feels like time to replace springs / dampers on my car (J780GGT). Any advice on what to go with?

I want to stay close to stock in how the car feels / performs, but thinking there may be better VFM out there than buying Porsche bits. The Bilstein / Walter Rohrl kit has been mentioned as an option.

Regards

David

I am no expert but i had a drive of Chris W's 964CS Cup front dampers/RS rears and it flet great - no roll and a lot more compliant than the standard RS setup.

KWs get a good rep too........

The Cups are a nightmare on the road. I would go for a set with helper springs for road use. KW or I use the H&R RSR set. Walter's set would be my first choice.

Who am are to argue! ;O)

I assume the Bilstein/Rohrl kit is available direct from Bilstein? What are the Bilstein part numbers for front and rear?

Mine still have rear Cup, but 993RS Front ..... simples road registered .....

Mine is now no longer mine --- but it had had all the springs, bushes and dampers replaced less than 20,000 Km ago --- standard rear dampers and Cup fronts.

Geo was standard initially, it's always a balance between good track wear and manageable road tyre wear.

I would never fit non-standard --- not the best option for easy re-sale, and probably unnecessary.

Just make the best of what you have, keep the car balanced and give yourself the space to keep it on the black stuff [;)]

Thanks for the replies.

I've gone for the Bilstein / Rohrl kit. Bizarrely it was in stock at Bilstein in the UK - though god knows how long it had sat there as there is not exactly a large market for these things.

Picking the car up tomorrow from GT-One - quite excited :) Will let you know how it feels.

Here is a link to the spec for it on the Bilstein site:

Hi David,
Your red RS looked great today and Tom kindly showed me your car, whilst dropping my N-GT off and saying farewell to Chris's x car which is back off to SCoM via Mel for a Top end rebuild after 100 miles of ownership!
Do let us know how your car feels with the new kit!

Lawrence,
We noticed on taking delivery it was burning a lot oil as it was visible on idle. So sent it into GT One for an inde report and it appears from this that it does definitely need a top end at least. So unfortunately it is as taken delivery, no more to add.
SCoM wanted it back to rectify. Disappointing start to ownership, but once fixed should be like new!

Quick update on how the car feels with the new suspension. Only done about 50 miles so early days. Have just checked back through the history file and it appears the car last had new dampers in 2002 at about 65k km. Standard RS rear and 993RS front. I had the geometry set by GT One in 2010 when they replaced some front bushes. Car is now at 97k - so old dampers were 10 years / 30k+ km old.

Walter's stuff certainly feels a better compromise for the road. The RS firmness is there - does not feel like any noticeable difference in the spring rates - but there is more compliance when you hit bumps. You can feel the four corners working more independently - it flows down the road better and feels less of a blunt weapon.

The most surprising thing is the steering is lighter and has more feel to it. Not sure why this would be given the geometry settings are the same as it was before, but that's how it feels. Straight line stability is improved as well, so I'm steering more with my finger tips and with less of the two-fisted gorilla grip I used to have to employ on the bumpy stuff.

The only downside that I have noticed so far is that when pressing on through a couple of fast corners the back end suddenly felt very light. It was not sliding but it felt like it was about to let go at speeds that I would not expect it to. So it may be it all needs to bed in a bit more or I need to firm the rear dampers up.

Cheers

David
