suspension, wheels & clutch

Hi p-fans,

After 3 months ownership and tons of forum reading both here and at Pelicanparts I have some questions for senior owners if i may.
- Car creeks on speed bumps. Mainly from rear suspension. Is that a sure simptom for shocks changing?
- Tyres are Michelin Pilots 225/55 rear and 205/60 front, both on 15" Teledials. I have not seen these meassures in any tyre threads. Could these be fouling speedo or driveability somehow?
- The car has done 185.000 Km and i have not records of clutch repairs nor valve adjusting. Should I have to budget for these in the near future? What would be tell-tale signs?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds more like bushes- such as real anti roll bar for example or suspension bushes

following url will give you an idea about the speedometer readings. Having said that, on 15 inch wheels, these tyres seem pretty much factory spec as usually they get replaced by cheaper 225/50 and 205/55 front tyres.

there are people who don't have to change clutches in 300.000 km and there are drivers who need to change it at 60.000 km. With a 911, it might be that after 160.000 km you better foresee a clutch change but ever km you get out of it is one extra. Tell tale signs are:
A weak or extremely stiff clutch pedal could be a sign of worn components.
Does the gear lever engage smoothly in all gears?
Does the gearbox or clutch make any unpleasant noises?
Does the clutch take up smoothly?
Does the clutch slip? Accelerate hard in a high gear to test this
Does reverse gear engage and work smoothly?

I have a vw golf with 407.000 km and I am still on my first clutch but my 2nd clutch cable. (replaced 360.000 km)
you might get lucky!

Valves are normally adjusted with the 12.000 mile/20.000 km service. If your car has Porsche/knowledgeble indepedant service history, you should be okay. Alternatively, you can treat her to a 20.000 km service?

Best of luck- Oh and by theway, I am in no way senior [;)]

Creaking suspension sounds like rear anti roll bar brackets. Check just in front of the rear wheels. The brackets are known to sheer. I had the same problem on one side. I think they cost around £40 each plus the cost of welding the new bracket in place. It would be worth replacing both. Stronger brackets are available....

Thank you for early responses.
I shall look into anti roll bar and shock bushes and brackets.
Regarding clutch it seems to be working fine, not too hard or soft action, nor slipage and all speeds engage very nicely. There is only some minor judder on taking up in first, easily cured by revving up a little, and there is a very slight click when declutching. The box is a G50.
On the valve issue i asked my newly found independent Porsche especialist to look into them but he replied that top end sounds good (?) and no need for adjustment this time. Can he really know only by listening the engine that all is OK?

By the way Bertroex, i am sure that all of you are senior to me in Porsche knowledge -at least-. A compliment in any case.

Keep an eye on that judder in first. Try putting the car in reverse. If you have the same judder as you move off then you will need to change the clutch, as it is not releasing off the flywheel cleanly. I had exactly the same problem. Revving up helps at first as does starting off in second. If you continue with the judder you can end up loosening the bellhousing bolts, which will lead to the engine separating when you depress the clutch. Not good as the ring gear could clip the casing.

With a new clutch the G50 should feel quite light, not overly so, but smooth and progressive.

I shall check if there is judder on reversing.
Sounds pretty scary to end up with your engine-trans broken in two. Is that a real possibility or is it Twinny being too exagerated? Should I change $$$$ clutch or stick to it till it last, i am not too sure
Javier

Nothing is breaking. If the vibration causes the nuts on the studs to loosen you can get a small amount of movement between the engine and the gearbox when you depress the clutch. I had the judder you described. When mine was inspected the movement had caused the ring gear to score a slight line on the inside of the bell housing. I caught the problem just in time according to the independent who replaced the clutch.

Don't ignore the judder, check it out or get it checked.

Message taken.Thanks twinny.
I went today to my IPS but ramps were full and couldn´t look at it properly.
While i was there i realise that the car had a rear stunt at some point in her life. Left side bumper seats slighlty proud and left rear light cluster is not fully enclosed into fender. Also back long engine bracket is twisted. I wonder if that juder may come from this?

It is possible that weak engine mounts could cause a similar effect. Would be a good idea to get them checked out whilst it's up on the ramps. Certainly wouldn't do any harm, particularly in light of what you have just found.
