Tim, I'm pretty sure you'll find the H&R coilover setup fairly expensive once you've paid out for fitting and alignment etc. I've heard that it's pretty good - and adjustable - but may be a little over the top for regular road use. The Bilsteins are a popular solution, married to a decent set of progressive springs. Eibachs and H&Rs both have their fans. The H&R Greens are very popular (I've got them) and the Bilsteins have plenty of adjustment room to get the ride heights to suit your preference. Your £1000 budget is just about doable if you're careful once you include the fitting and alignment. Regards Dave

Hi Guys

I am about to order a new set of shocks/springs for my 93 964 targa c2 from shox.com

What do you recommend for road use?? looking at the h+r street performance setup. Is this any good?? or should i go with blistern hds with h+r springs???

questions,questions!!!!

looking to spend up to 1k on kit so bear this in mind also want half decent ride!!

Thanks for all your help

Tim

I have the bilstein HD and H&R green setup which I like a lot, I've been in Christers which IIRC has the H&R supercup? coilover setup, far and away better in corners then mine, but not worth the money if you're not going to take advantage of it say on the track. But that's only my humble opinion. Kevin.

Tim, Earlier this year fitted Bilsteins with Porsche MO30 springs. Kept with factory ride heights for now. May lower in the future. As Dave has pointed out there is plenty of scope for adjustment. Well pleased with this set-up for spirited road driving.

Firstly thanks for the replies. I was thinking about installing the kit myself (I have access to proffessional spring compressors) and then getting someone to set it up. Is this a good idea?.I have fitted springs/shocks on other cars in the past. Dave did you get your springs from shox.com? I see H+R set for $324 but this seems a bit expensive after shipping costs etc. The shocks are cheap at $679 though. So all in about $1000 or around £500 pounds+taxes etc. Does anyone know anything about the other kits Shox.com offer??koni etc. Going to replace my front wishbones at the same time as the suspension due to cracked bushes (I have a spare set fitted with powerflex bushes) also thinking about big reds front and rear when funds allow. Cant wait to order Tim

Tim, I didn't buy the springs in the US - I had them fitted by JZ Machtech a few years ago but retained them when I had the Bilsteins fitted. I bought the Bilsteins from Pelican Parts but I beleive shox.com have a slightly better price. Paul (polar964 above) had a bit of a bad experience with Pelican although mine went smoothly enough. It's kind of pot luck on the VAT and Duty front. Some get hit and others don't. If you can get the supplier to ship via USPS (US Postal Service) you stand a better chance than most of getting away with it - but don't count on it. The big couriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL etc.) will nearly always get you caught. The H&R Greens are £200 + VAT at Design 911 so $324 will still save you some decent money. BTW I beleive it's not necessary to use a spring compressor - for the fronts at least - since the strut comes off complete with spring and extends enough to release the tension. Regards Dave

Thanks Dave, I will let you guys know what I decide to order but at the moment it looks like bilsteins with green springs. I would still like the coil over kit by H+R but I am not sure its worth the extra spend for what I use the car for from what has been said on here. Who knows I may have a moment of madness and buy the H+R kit!!!!. Tim

I fitted my own, the rears are difficult due to the amount of effort needed to undo the lower bolt, other than that a 1 day job on your own. I posted some info on my website.... Kevin.

Used Bilstein HDs and H and R springs from Carnewal on my 993 Carerra. Truly brilliant set up which works fine on the road and well on track and offers good value. I think a big issue is good set up!

Tim, I had new front damper inserts fitted by Chris at Center Gravity recently. He recommended trying Koni sport inserts on my Targa, which is what I went for. Very happy with them, and will go for rear replacements when I have the cash. Just be aware that the Targa is inherently less stiff than a coupe, so a slightly softer damper can be more beneficial than going for some of those mentioned. A stiffer set up can cause additional vibrations not suited to the Targa. You could try emailing Chris for his thoughts, as he has huge experience in setting up suspension systems. Paul.
