Switched live in fusebox

Chaps,

Quickie. I've splashed out on a Dash Cam for my S2 (mainly because I don't trust a lot of the drivers around my way. Let's say I live in Tower Hamlets and leave it at that.) It needs a switched live source to turn it on when the ignition is on.

Car electrics are one thing that doesn't frighten me, but instead of hacking around the wiring harness any more I was wondering whether there may be a free spade terminal in the fusebox that is a switched live that I could simply plug into. Does anyone have any experience of finding such a thing? If so, which one is good? Or do I need to get in there with a multimeter and test each one in turn until I find one that does what I want it to?

Thanks,

Oli.

Tower Hamlets !...I'm surprised that your car isn't wheel-less and on fire most of the time [:D]

I can find you one Oli I've got the full 15 page electrical schematic supplement on my lap, I'll take a looksee whilst I'm watching the telly.
How about fuse 36 radio /clock feed thats switch live Green wire 2.5

If you have an aftermaket HU with an ISO loom for it there is a chance you can take a switched live off one of the spare connections from the loom :). Zero hacking required this way too.

Peanut, thanks, that's a good one to aim for. Are there spare terminals for that in the fuse box? If so, where?

Chas, that's a good idea, thank you. I'd prefer to come from the fuse box if I can as I will run the wire for the camera up the passenger side A-pillar, and hence running it from the fuse box will be tidier. However if that fails then I'll go with your suggestion.

Simon,

Thanks. That first one looks interesting. I'm not sure that I like it any more than the idea of splicing into an existing wire, but I can see the appeal of it. Thanks for the link.

I've ordered something very like the second one, with a panel mount USB (female) socket on the end of it and a 3A supply rating. I'll probably arrange for the whole schebang to live somewhere around the glovebox, and use a regular USB cable to run from the socket, up the A-pillar and to the camera.

Something like this can help you to finish it off if youre using a USB cable: http://www.dx.com/p/12v-24v-to-5v-2-1a-2-port-usb-2-0-vehicle-car-power-inverter-converter-for-mazda-black-365524#.VPimRc9FBOs

I think that the add-a-circuit device is massively preferable to cutting the wiring loom, in every way. Combined with a 90° adapter for the camera end of the cable, the 5v power supply allows you to make the neatest and most integrated installation.

Ive gone one step further and I have a camera which is part of the rear view mirror.

The best solution is to find a spade terminal on the fuse box which will switch with the ignition, which is what I am hoping to do.

Thanks for the links from DX - they're interesting. I guess they clip straight into spare slots on ford and mazda dashboards? You could do something similar to build an accessible USB port into a blank switch space just in front of the gearstick on a 944, which would be quite smart.

Sounds interesting. Do you have a picture?

Not until it arrives.

They offer a number of styles. I presume that they broadly fit in with Ford, Mazda or Toyotas current peripheral switch style - Id use them in a concealed location though, rather than deface the surround.

The cheapest/plainest and probably the best for us:

I am less than enthusiastic about the chrome bling around the lens.

It might have the innards of an 801 or an 803 inside, or it may be gashola - it remains to be seen! [:D]

There are rather more buttons and sockets on it than an 0801 or 0803 has, which suggests it's not simply a rebodied one of those.

Let us know what it's like. It should make a smarter install than that which I am planning, for sure.
