T5 driver thinking about a Porsche

Hi everyone,

I've always fancied a 944 Turbo (not sure why just like the look of them.) Currently scooting around in a modified 280bhp Volvo S40 T5.

my current car

Complete Newbie to Porsche - anyone got any wise words to get me started?

I might add - I live in Glasgow, so any meets or good places to meet up with some of you guys for a coffee to get the chat would be appreciated.

Thanks :) Ben

Hi Ben.

Nice looking Volvo you have there. You'll find that the 944 Turbo is by far the most modifiable of the front-engined Porsches, which looks like it might be right up your alley "¦

Me and my '44 Turbo are in Glasgow city centre. Happy to grab a beer or coffee sometime if you want to run through some questions. The Glaswegian PCGB guys meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Sherbrooke Castle on the Southside. About 8pm-ish, I think.

Generally speaking, do some reading around both this forum and the one for TIPEC (the other main Porsche owners' club) and you should be able to arm yourself with enough pertinent questions to ask when looking at cars for sale.

It's wise to budget a grand on top of the cost of your car, to cover tweaks and fixes over the first year. Everybody seems to spend about that in their first year of 944 ownership. Shop around a lot for insurance"”the G1 postcode brings up a red flag with most classic insurers.

The basics to check for a 944 Turbo are integrity of the side sills (rusty internal sills = expensive to fix) and the same on the bottom edge of the front wings, history of regular belt changes, and whether there are any leaks in the boost system. You'll be lucky to find one with working air-con, so keep that low on your list of priorities.

Good luck and have fun searching!

No wonder we dont see you at the Glasgow meets ...its a Tuesday night [:D][:D] all good advice from a 944 owner as to what to look for .

Ben, it's the first Tuesday of the month at the Sherbrooke Hotel, 11 Sherbrooke Avenue, Pollockshields. Think the guys meet up about 7.30-8pm

D'oh. Tuesday, not Wednesday. I'm rubbish. Thanks guys!

You don't see me at Sherbrooke because I'm too scared of my front splitter getting over-friendly with the exit ramp "¦

Fair enough. The last few times I did go along most people were in their "˜other' cars, so I had no idea. There's an awful lot of paint scrapes on that bit of tarmac "¦

Thats mostly from the piss heads in their company cars leaving drunk and not giving a toss ;)

Just take it at an angle and it won't scrape - there's plenty space to do it that way......or park on the street outside if you're concerned - its only a 2 minute walk :D

Hi Ben,

As you will see from the post's we have an informal meeting the first tuesday of each month at the sherbrooke - just look for the anoraks brigade in the corner talking about cars !

We have had a couple of new members join in the last couple of months both with 2.7 944s, - and Tony (Poprock) I would imagine is a wealth of knowledge.

I will be along to the next meeting so perhaps see you there -

If you need any info on the club, feel free to email directly or give me a call on 07971 664 647

Regards
Scott.
