Tacho Counter Display Screen

Andy B Aces High

New member
I have noticed that the small fuel computer screen in the bottom of the Tacho has recently faded, anyone else had this issue and if so is it fixable ? The numbers are just visable but have faded significantly over the last couple of months.

If so anyone got any tips on getting the Tacho out of the dash as I cannot at present see how to remove it ?

Cheers,

Andy B

You need to remove the steering wheel.

There are 2 approaches either remove one of the smaller dials and then work your way along with the help of reaching behind the dial through the hole left by the removed one.

Or remove the large tacho directly. I did mine that way using a large flat blade screwdriver with some rag neatly wrapped around the tip so as not to scratch the bezel. I also used a wide bladed flat chisel as a base to leaver against and to protect the dash.

With the tacho out, it's a case of removing the back which exposes the 2 backlight bulbs. Then you need to de-solder the 3 pins that you see poking through the board and then gently lever the top board away to expose the inner one. There you'll find the bulb that illuminates the computer screen.

I changed that for a very bright red LED and did a partial re-assembly to verify that the bulb lit, as LED's are polarity sensitive.
I replaced the backlight bulbs with bright white LED's and checked all was well before soldering the long pins back to the top component board.

Message me if you need any help.

I think having to unsolder the pins is only required on 964, although if yours is a early 993 it may well have a 964 rev counter.

My 993 has a 993 part number and you can change the bulb just by taking the back off.
Although unless you are lucky, it is more likely to be a faulty component on the circuit board.
Some people have fixed it short term, by the old age thing of hitting it till it lights up.

Do a search on here and you can find more info on it.

As way of intrest, a new one is around 1400 pounds from porsche.
If you look for a second hand one, be careful, i bought a new old stock one from a independence porsche dealer at half the new price, turned out to be a european spec one, and they wont take it back as its an electrical item.

Yes it will remove as Dekker described above.
If you have a three spoke steering wheel, you will need to remove it first.
But if you have the four spoke wheel, some owners have been able to take out the rev counter with the wheel still on.
hope you get sorted ok, regards
