I was surprised when after parking my S2 on on upward slope for 2 rainy days to find a lot of water on the ledge behind the 'well' on the right hand side of the boot, apparently when I drove away a lot of water poured out of the rear of the car. I think the problem lies with the tail gate latch seals, I peeled the right one back to find RUST!! under it. Has anyone had a similar experience? are the rectangular seals in the body easy to replace? Where is the best place to get them? Do I need to replace any other seals? E.G. the little rubbers around the latch posta? The main tail gate seal seems ok. Any ideas?

I helped a friend replace the rectangular seals that are down in the body by the latches (OPC a few quid each IIRC) and as long as you warm the new ones up in hot water and smear them with fairy liquid, they push in quite nicely. The old ones had to be destructively removed []
Have you checked that the two drain tubes are still attached to the underside of the latches. They should take away any water that comes in through the latch and drain it at the back of the rear wheel arch

Tony,
Don't panic yet - the rust _may_ be just the securing plate disintegrating - number 25 in this diagram:

On my '86 Lux, the flat bit of the plate had almost rusted away but the bodywork underneath was unmarked! It now has a nice shiney new one from my friendly OPC []
Cheers,
Jim.

Thanks chaps, on further examination the leak turned out to be coming from the n/s rear light cluster. It must have been removed for some reason and not put back with the correct sealing mastic, I've got some from my local specialist, incidentally the light unit is stuck in very firmly by the said mastic and the 'correct' method of removal, after undoing the 6 8mm nuts, is to sit/lie in the boot and apply steady strong pressure to the back of the unit with your foot until it finally moves. Thanks especially to Jim for the exploded view - I'll investigate this tomorrow.
