I have an awfull creak at the top of my tailgate that is like a clack-clack sound[]I wonder if ther is a fix reccomended for this.I can open the tailgate and there is a certain amount of flexing between the top of the glass and its frame,is this normal or is it a case of resealing/bonding?or is there an adjustment in the hinges maybe?
I did replace the tailgate seal due to a seperate problem of a water leak and this still drips in a down pour(not as bad)weather the tailgate is related to this problem aswell im not sure.
Any advice would be much appreciated thanks[:)]

This is common. The adhesive in the frame that glues the glass into it has hardened over time and seperated from the glass. The tailgate squeaking actually comes from here rather than the pins as is commonly thought. The proper fix is to remove the tailgate, remove the spoiler and frame to get the glass tailgate out, scrape off all the old adhesive residue from the glass edge and from inside the frame and re-apply fresh adhesive and re-assemble and you're good for another 15yrs. There are instructions somewhere on Rennlist on this. But it is a long and labourious job.

A quicker route that can sometimes be effective is to try to scrape as much of the old adhesive while the hatch is still assembled with a long flat blade type tool and try to force fresh adhesive into the frame. Care needs to be taken not to damage or scratch the frame.

Of course, there is a third option - live with it. As long as it isn't leaking and you can put up with the rattling.

I did wonder if it was the pins and elliminated this by fitting rubber pads between the tailgate and the tailgate shut.
I dont fancy the removal and strip down as it sounds an awfull job[]

The pins can help things slightly as the catches rather than the pins can wear. You can see this when you look down inot the hole. I replaced my catches and the difference between the new ones and the old ones is quite noticeable. When worn this allows the pins to rattle around more in the holes as the chassis and the tailgate move relative to each other. However the squeaking noise is definitely from the glass moving around in the frame.

Yes it is a real PITA job. Once I did consider buying a tailgate from a breakers and working on that one over a number of weeks and simply swapping the tailgates over to minimise or prevent any off-road time, but it was one of those projects that I could never find time for.

Refreshing the seals will help as it will provide a bit more support around the tailgate, but the tail gate is so heavy even a fresh and springy seal wont stop it completely.

You could try the second approach which is to scrape out the old glue and try to squirt some in the gap between the glass and the frame, or even try to squirt some WD40 in there to lubricate the moving parts and stop the squeaking (this method works a treat on squeaking dashboards) - but this could be messy with dirty W40 residue dripping into your interior.
