Following my problems at JAMSport, I was given to wonder if the position of the exhaust probe in the tail pipe could effect the readings taken. Here are my thoughts, what do you guys think?
I have an Essential Styling "" Janspeed oval rear section exhaust. The construction is such that they have a perforated pipe of 2" dia running through the rear silencer with, in effect, the tail pipe squashed can welded to the rear face of the silencer box. To my mind, if the probe is only in the can section, not in the full flow area of the pipe, it may read erroneously:-
Low revs "" low exhaust gas velocity. Gasses flow out from the 2" pipe into the tail can and, without the velocity to project them, accumulate within the tail can.
High revs "" high exhaust velocity. Gasses projected out of 2" section and clear the tail can completely due to high velocity. If the probe in the tail can is out of direct flow of 2" pipe it could end up in a low pressure area where it is not reading correctly.
I'm sure the above is complete rubbish and JAMSport have such exhausts all the time, but it did seem strange that there was a lot of unplugging, re-plugging and checking of the sensor during my run.
Tony "944Turbo" has the same rear section as me but I don't know if they were paying as much attention to his read outs as there wasn't any reprogramming underway.
