Talking about headlights - dim headlight

I was out last night and switched on the headlights and noticed the nearside dipped beam was really dim. Also, if I switch main beam on, either flash or constant, it doesn;t work on that light and when I turn if off again both secondary main beams (in the bumper) stay on and won't go off unless I switch the dipped beams off [:(]

I thought it may have been the bulb but I've changed that and there's no difference so then thought bad earth. Anyway popped the headlights out (and the secondary lights) and all of the contacts are like brand new so now I'm wondering where to look.

Has anyone else had this problem or have a got a job on my hands trying to track this down - wierd stuff this electrikery [8|]

I had a similar wierd problem with my headlights that turned out to be a frayed wire inside the outer sheathing, caused by the years of constant flexing when the popups go up and down. It frayed just where the cable actually disappeared into the bulkhead and I couldn't get in there to replace the wire so had to pay an auto-electrician to do it tidily for me [&:]

I had the same problem too about this time last year and it turned out to be the same fix as Paul. One wire had snapped and one had the plastic coating worn off and so was shorting. Fortuantley mine broke about half way between the light and the bulkhead so was a little eaiser to fix myself. You will have to strip the black outer coating of the loom to get o the wires to find where the break is though, then wrap it all back up with black electrical tape. I think the reason the fogs come on is a failsafe built in, so if you loose a headlight you automatically have a sort of backup.
