I've been asked to provide:

A photocopy of my driving licence, proof of no claims and a declaration about the immobiliser!

Performance Marque asked me to do the same a while back. No big deal is it?

Don't see the problem! You prove to them how many points, if any, you have on your licence, what no claims bonus you've earned and that a tracker is installed! With the exception of showing my licence, I've had to provide the other 2 items for every high performance and valuable car that I've owned - and always proof of my NCB. There's nothing to hide - is there?

I have always had to post the original letter of NCB and fax copy of Tracker installation. Why do they need declaration of immobiliser? Isn't this standard factory fitted on all Porsches; they should have that on their car database?

Obviously my post went over a few heads!

The reason I posted is that:

(a) I've never, ever in the 32 years that I have been driving, been asked to provide a copy of my driving licence when taking out an insurance policy.

Derek I don't see why I have to prove anything - you sign on your proposal form that what you have written down or can see in print is the truth do you not?

(b) NCB I haven't been asked to provide proof for at least the last 5 years that I've owned my car and from what I remember the car before - aren't all brokers/underwriters electronically linked?

(c) The immobiliser (which isn't a tracker by the way) is a standard factory fit and as Kish pointed out they should be aware of this anyway.

I guess I must have just been fortunate enough to deal with more efficient practices previously!

John, apologies if I caused any offence; that wasn't my intention. Whilst I've never had to provide a copy of my driving licence, it doesn't surprise that insurers are asking for one now; indeed, the actions and requirements of insurers never cease to amaze me! As for the NCB proof, I've been asked on every occasion that I've changed insurers. and yes I did misunderstand in respect of the immobiliser; however, I know that some insurers seek confirmation of the Thatcham category of any immobiliser as that can affect the premium.

Once again, apologies!

No problems I had my Monday morning head on.[&:]

I managed to speak to one of their customer services people and was advised:

The immobiliser declaration form gets sent out to all policyholders regardless of the origin of the device. Apparently I am signing the form to confirm that it is working.[&:] How does one test it is working - attempt to hotwire it?[8|]

The copy of the licence is taken to check what you have claimed on the proposal form in case of an claim - post accident. I would have thought a copy post accident would have been more sensible but what do I know?

And despite the existence of the Claims and Underwriting Exchange Register, the Motor Insurance Anti-Fraud Register and the Motor Insurance Database I have to provide them with details of my previous insurers via a paper form!

There's progress for you!

It's a pain but, unfortunately, we live in an age of red tape and beaurocracy and, presumably, insurance companies now have more demanding regulatory requirements. I seem to be regularly asked for 'proof of identity' or 'proof of address', even from organisations I've used for countless years. The other day I re-registered an old tractor with the DVLA and they required me to send my original driving licence.

With insurance companies they used to be more casual about items of evidence, expecting to ask for them in the event of a claim. However this lead to a lot of disputes where evidence wasn't always forthcoming and claims were not being met. With automated claims processing, I suppose the regulators are insisting that the evidence is seen and approved in advance to avoid future problems..

With regard to the imobiliser, some non-UK Porsches may not have one, and some may have had it disconnected.

Adrian Flux asked me for exactly the same when I was trying to insure the 968. They also gave me the most expensive quotation I received! [:'(]

Wasn't overly impressed with them personally - especially as the chap kept calling me 'luv'! Grrrrrr!

I have in the past been asked for proof on NCB from various insurers, ive also been asked for a copy of my immob certificate ! i managed to get a headed paper stating that it works from a vauxhall garage..........
There is a list of approved installations at http://www.thatcham.org/ for them to consult if reqd.
