Tall Driver Buys 993

You guys might not remember but last year I joined the forum and asked whether a 6' 6" guy could fit into a 993. I'm happy to report that after much research I've finally bought a 1997 993 C2s (wide body) with 30,000 miles on the clock. Before you ask it's a LHD car and has recently arrived back from a life long holiday in Japan. The car is mint as can be seen by the attached pic.

I pick her up in the next couple of weeks and then drive back down to Crete. The reason for the post is to explain what we did to ensure I would fit with room to spare.

Firstly, the car has no sun roof which adds a good inch+ to the head room. Secondly, the driver side carpet was lifted and some of the insulation removed. Thirdly, the car is a tipitronic and so there is more room in the footwell than in the manual car. However, we removed some of the brake pedal (right hand side) so that size 12 feet would have no problem moving from brake to accelerator and vice versa. Fourthly, both seats (standard electric comfort seats) were lowered and the runners moved back which again adds sufficient room for someone of my height to feel comfortable in the small cabin.

My question now is - where can one find a more "racy" turbo 3-spoke steering wheel and air bag for the tipitronic C2S and can it be fitted without any major modifications?

Cheers

Sorry Guys, looks like my attachment didn't work. I'll try and embed in this post and see what happens.

Great registration plate - I hope that was still on it when it arrived in europe - good thing to have on your garage wall!

What lengths some people will go to so they can drive a 993 [:D] - I remember your posts last year - really good that you solved the problem and did not have to resort to a water-cooled example.

Enjoy the driving.

Just thought - don't the Japanese drive on same side of road as UK? (I know you probably want a LHD for Crete and it gives more foot space anyway - but it just seems odd that an LHD spent all that time in Japan)

Mark,

You're correct, the Japanese do drive on the same side as the UK so it is a little strange to find a LHD car across there. I bought the car through Adrian Crawford http://www.performance2and4.co.uk who finds and supplies cars from that side of the globe and last month went down to Plymouth to sit in it and ensure that I fit. I must admit to being a little dubious having struggled to sit in the same age of car in Rome but this time there was no problem.

The Arctic Silver would not have been my colour of choice but has certainly grown on me since sitting in it. In point of fact the colour is perfect for over here i.e. will reflect the sun far better than my favoured black colour.

The car had BBS wheels on it but Adrian has sourced 18" turbo twist wheels which I feel will look better and are also more original.

The car was not cheap but because of the drop in sterling (30%) against the euro over the last 18 months it should hopefully wash its face if I ever decide to sell in the future - or that's what I'm telling the wife anyway!!

Cheers,

Jon

Hi

In answer to your other question, I think any of the 996 onwards range of 3 Spoke steering wheels and airbags will fit.

Other option is a non airbag steering wheel, usually sold as a "Clubsport" or "RS" wheel, but this means you would need to disable the airbag warning light

Re your post about the new purchase.
I bought a tiptronic last summer and being tall, not as tall as you, am interested in the comment about seat runners being moved back. Did you do it, or a specialist?
If you, was it difficult? I could do with some more inches - or part!

Paul,

I bought the car from Adrian Crawford (Porsche Specialist in Plymouth) and Adrian had the seat lowered and the rails moved on my behalf. If you want to contact him directly and discuss how then you can contact him at adrian@performance2and4.co.uk

Hope this helps,

Jon

Nice one TD.

Hope you realised seat does adjust up and down ? I'm six foot and I have about four inches of headroom even with a sunroof. Surprised you needed to make all the mods. Nice car though !

Mark,

At least you made me smile! You're talking to someone who bought a 1961 flat bottom e-Type from Florida - unseen - and could not fit into the car on it's arrival in the UK. Lesson learned.

All the adjustments were made so the driving experience would not be a compromise.

We tall guys have to compromise in most things - the average guy gets catered for so as to maximise profit - and therefore the mods were done as a treat to yours truly.

One week to go before I fly back to the UK and then drive the 993 south to Crete.

Adrian Crawford sent a pic of the car with the new 18" wheels - in my opinion the classic Porsche look and so much better than the BBS alloys she had before.

Picked up the car on Wednesday from Plymouth and then drove to Harwich and crossed to the Hook of Holland. We spent a day in Amsterdam and then drove across Holland to Germany, turned south and crossed the Swiss Alps into Northern Italy. The car was a dream to drive and in the last five days drove 2800 kilometres. I've not been able to keep a smile off my face since picking her up. I fit just fine although after four hours solid did need to take a break to stretch the legs etc. I did the same drive a few months back in a Land Cruiser and it was like driving in a Lazy-Boy armchair.

The Autobahns were brilliant - although busy because of Easter - and the top end power i.e. acceleration from 90 and up was awesome. The roar of that engine as you wind it up is just a joy.

Suffice to say I loved every second of week one and although the roads on Crete are far from ideal the car will certainly turn heads of here.
