i hav a problem when my car is cold the oil pressure is 3bar at idle and ticks quite loud which aint normal and wiv afew revvs itas strait to 5bar but when it warms up it qoes quiet and at idle the oil is at 4.5 5bar now i hav a feeling the is a blockage some where does any one hav any idea ive had a new oil relife valve fitted not so long ago and oil pump so i dont think its anything to do wiv them and i dont want to take the head off to rplace the oil reducing valve.so any ideas. also does anyone hav a a diagram which shows the flow and as to where the oil flows from and too and all the little holes that it goes through coz i dont hav one on my service and manual cd cheers mark [:)][:)][:)][:)]
 
Your oil pressure is about right - perhaps cold idle pressure is a little low at 3 bar, but 3 bar idling when warm and 4.5 - 5 bar revved is fine[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Sounds like a tappet. If something is worn then it tends to get noisy when the oil is hot, with a sticky tappet the hot oil drains out when you stop the engine and the cold oil takes some time to get back in and pump it up when you restart it. They don't do a lot of harm and it can be tricky to identify which is the culprit. At £20 or so each, especially on an S2 (don't know which you have) you probably don't want to just replace them all.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
 
Actually, I have an intermittent tap from my S2, I'm sure its a tappet.

so you need to distinguish between a single tappet that may be noisy or tappet noise coming from all tappets as a result of low oil pressure. It should be easy enough to differentiate.

I'm living with mine, as Fen said trying to isolate the problem to a specific tappet is not easy.

Add some "Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment" - works wonders.

It is strongly rumoured that the 'current' replacement tappets that you would be able to acquire are inferior ...

I agree - marvellous stuff, sorted out my noisy tappets straight away almost.
 
Didn't work on my 306. Then that did turn out to be a big end, so I guess that's no reflection on Wynn's.
 
Good stuff guys I'm going to give it a try.

Definitely a less messy alternative to running the engine with the rocker cover off, with the plastic bag over the head and using an engine stethoscope to find the noisy culprit.........

You do tip in into the oil. I imagine it's a cleaner, much like an engine flush but weak enough that you can supposedly leave it in the oil while you run the car.[FONT=verdana,geneva"] [FONT=verdana,geneva"]When I put it in the 306 it was for about 2,500 miles before the next service. It made no discernable difference; as I said it wasn't a tappet after all, but crucially it didn't make the big end noise worse. I then went with an engine flush just before the oil change and rev the nuts off it with the new oil once it was warm. That was what put the big end over the edge. Lesson learned: no matter how much a noise sounds like a tappet (and 3 or 4 respected mechanic types agreed it did and I thought I had it isolted to one of the #2 inlet valves), tappets are worse when cold and big ends are quiet when cold and get noisy when hot.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
