Tappets/ Valve clearances

HI All! Has anyone ever adjusted their valve clearances? I've read my Bentley manual and it suggests you have to drain the oil. I've never needed to do this on other cars but then this is a dry sump system and I'm not sure how that alters things?? If anyone has any experience of doing this, it would be good to know whether you dropped the oil or not and also, how easy a job it is? Cheers

hi kris I am looking to do my tappets, I to have the bentley manual to,and I think you will find that because its a flat 6 some of the oil sits in the base off the engine not just the tank. let us know how you get on .

Hi Mick,

I've thought about it a bit more now and realise the oil will definitely have to come out. The lower valve covers are bound to release a fair amount of oil when they are removed. Thing is, I have just changed the oil, so I think that will have to wait until the next oil change. I'll let you know if I do it in the near future. Cheers

Just seen this, the oil will go everywhere if you don't drain it first, there isn't a great amount held there but enough to make a mess. Even when you have drained the oil have a drip tray or towels, kitty litter under the engine.

Bones is right. You dont have to empty the oil tank but there will be a good amount of oil in the sump and under the valve covers. You will need a good size oil tray as I think there can be 3-4 litres in there that will come out. It comes out fast as well. Just in case you didnt see that it comes out FAST. You wont manage with a cat tray and several flower pots.

Apparently it is possible to reduce the oil loss by doing one side at a time and jacking that side up so the oil flows to the other. I'm sure it would help but not sure its worth the effort.

Search the Pelican Parts 911 Forum for more info on this.

Cheers
