Tappets

I ordered a few new tappets for my S2 from Porsche. They just won't quieten down enough for me so I'm going to change some of them. I would have bought a full set but they are a bit pricey at £36 plus vat each. Looking forward to a non ticky engine.

In my youth I worked in a garage where the old school mechanic would "restore" hydraulic lifters by soaking them overnight in solvent then removing the circlips to disassemble the lifter for more soaking and cleaning with rags. Once all the varnish was removed, reassemble, prime them with engine oil (pump them while submerged in oil to get all the air out) and then re-install. 99% of the time everything was back to normal. The odd lifter would need replacing due to scoring/wear internally (collapsed lifters - wouldn't hold any pressure) but this was usually only on very high mileage motors.

Looks like the 944 lifter assemblies are little more complex but given the price of new ones - sounds to me like its worth a try.

Colin - I've got some - can't tell you which ones work but I don't think all 16 are shot. Just sitting in the old engine in my garage.

I've ordered 4 as we ran it up to temp and pulled the cam cover off then squeezed all the tappets and two seemed to be soft with a couple giving a wee bit of give. So I reckon if I do four then that should sort it out.

16V engines are easier than 8V ones. You can use Audi lifters, which are far more cheaper. A friend of mine installed those into his 32V 928 GTS

Hi, when I had my head rebuilt by Modus engineering in Kent they are able to split the tappets to check they are good. Good service and price.

I replaced all 16 of the tappets in my old S2 for VW Golf GTI ones genuine VW parts all 16 for £72 worked a treat
VW part number 050.109.309 (J) although think the (J) is replaced by an (H) now. Only difference was the oil way groove and the oil hole to base measurement but they pumped up fine as the oil feed in the head has a lot of tolerance.

Porsche dimensions
Diameter 35
Piston head (internal) 11
Piston to base (internal) 7.5
Height 25.5
Oil hole dia 2
Oil hole to base 10

VW dimensions
Diameter 35
Piston head (internal) 11
Piston to base (internal) 6.5
Height 26
Oil hole dia 2
Oil hole to base 10.5

Although they were genuine VW they were the same manufacturer as the only Porsche ones you can get now

On my recent S2 engine rebuild, the engineer took them all apart before refitting them.
If i remember correctly he just tapped them on a piece of plastic and they came apart.
He said you should do that whenever you take them out for a while.

I have re-built my engine and I stripped down and re-built the lifters. It is quite easy once you have done one but you will need space, chemicals and some tools. Took me about 4 hours to do the lot though. Easy and satisfying job.

Any more details on how this is done?

Oli.
