tappety engine

just got my 1st 996, a 60k miles '99 model and its a brilliant car... got it inspected by a specialist before i got it... when i drove it back to belfast, i noticed the engine was slightly tappety... its a very light tap at idle that speeds up as i rev and don't really hear it above 2500 rpm... its it normal for these engines to sound like that... i though the hydraulic lifters should be quiet...

Sometimes you get a clatter that lasts for a few seconds when the engine is started from cold, usually after it has been standing for a while. This is just because the oil can drain from the hydraulic lifters and takes a short time to pump up. Once running, they should be quiet.

Is it just one cylinder, or all the tappets? Any idea what the condition of the oil is? It sounds to me like it needs investigation.

i know the taps lasting seconds from cold and then disappears... this one then continues, a very light tap, more tick tick tick that speeds up as it revs... i think its one lifter only... only heard it after 350 miles as i drove from stratford-upon-avon to stranraer... its not there all the time... its actually quieter when cold... by 2500rpm i can't hear it over the engine noise... funny i got the car inspected by mark wibberly of www.carinspections.co.uk as i was in belfast and the car was in stratford-upon-avon and they didn't report the noise... i think is louder on the offside bank... the last minor service was done in august at 56k miles... now has 61k... the oil is still fairly clean... btw i'm a pcgb member but i can't seem to change this in my profile

thanks for help with non-member status... will email hq now... still would appreciate any advice re engine...

It's difficult to know what to suggest without seeing it. Maybe get a specialist to look at it, although it might be worth trying an oil and filter change, perhaps using a 5W-40 rather than 0W-40.

no specialist in belfast :( will book a major service for the car and mention the noise to see if they come up with anything

noise now sorted... booked into belfast opc for major service and told them to have a look... turned out a spark plug was slightly loose... new plugs in and no damage done... all running smoothly now... engine sounds great again

funny neither did i... thought it was a sticky lifter or variocam problem... the tap/tick was too light to be chain/tensioner...
