tapping screws and bolts

Does anybody know a good place to get self tapping screws and bolts (hex head)? There seem to be a lot of them on my car, holding brake ducts, undertrays etc. etc.. I'm a bit lost in the variety, but when I go to the OPC to buy a few proper ones (no doubt at over the odds), I'm sure they snigger!

Check your "yellow pages" or whatever you call your business listings for nut and bolt supply. I too have gone to the OPC for screws - I lost one of the (tiny) black anodized ones that hold on the head light covers...When they arrived at a cost of about C$3.50 each - they weren't black anodized - and tough luck for me.... An industrial supply could have provided the same thing for a few pennies.

The only time I would consider going to the OPC for screws and bolts is if I had to have new micro-encapsulated bolts and only if I couldn't get them elsewhere.

If you are anywhere near London and need a screw (or bolt, or fastener, or just about anything else in any material, size or finish AND off the shelf) these are your guys Clerkenwell screws. They also do mail order but you will have to be very precise as there is a lot of choice!

To anyone who is in the vicinity, even if you don't need a sc... fastener, just pop in to see what a hardware shop shoudl look like.

Probably not much help here, but worth a look, are Amazon's "Silverline" range. They sell boxes of mixed fasteners for silly money, £2-£3 for a box inc. delivery if you order £10 or more, I think.

I bought a load of them, as I only ever need the odd one or two in any size, so buying a box of 500 M6 wingnuts, or 1000 hitch pins, is a waste.

Orbital Fasteners used to sell smaller quantities at their trade counter in Rickmansworth, but I think their mail order is large packs only.

A moment of clarity!! Just checked my stock of useful bagged washers and screws bought at car shows (especially the kit car show...don't snigger, best autojumble anywhere).

They're all from Spalding Fasteners (www.spaldingfasteners.co.uk)....my stock incudes 2 bags of "J clips", the trapped nut thingy that always falls down the back of the trim.....!

Which reminds me, I need some screws to mount the Promax/Ben Rodriguez fog light covers I bought ages ago. Thanks for reminding me!

Thanks. Spaldings fasteners look pretty good and do some box sets, although not the cheapest. I am tending to trawl Amazon and ebay. More often that not I find something, but it often takes a while to find one little thing.
