Targa Bar

My targa bar has now started to show it age and needs re-spraying. How do I get it off, I see that there are various screws that are onlong the inside edge where the rear seal is, do I just undo these and it should pop off?

Cheers

Neil

Neil the roll bar is covered by the Targa hoop or shroud which is made out of stainless steel, (not easy to paint) . Remove front and rear seals by carefully unpicking the glue, take some photographs so you can see how things were before you stripped it. Unscrew the row of small screws on the front of the hoop and then the four nuts in the front part of the rear wings right where the bar meets the body. It would help if you remove the rear wheels and put the car high up on axle stands , look up in there and with an extender on your wrench you should be able to easily undo the bolts. If they are ceased squirt plenty of penetrating fluid in there and they should let go.
There is some foam attached to the top of the roll bar which has seen better days by now so replace that with some from a foam supplier and when you are refitting get someone to help hold it because it is a wobbly critter with a mind of it's own. Clean up the seal runners as best you can and do a trial fit of the seals before you use any glue (Evo-Stick seems to work), I found the side pieces (behind the windows) the hardest to stick down.
Good luck post a pick and join the Porsche Buddies scheme.

Don't know what state it's in but, if yours is bad, there's a hoop cover on ebay...

Thanks for the help! But I only want to get the cover off and get it sprayed as it has discoloured! But I'm stuck with some rusted screws. Being an 80's car there is a mobile phone aerial in the middle of the hoop that I need to get rid of.

Cheers

Which screws are rusted the small philips type ones? If so Iwould put penetrating oil on there overnight and then use an impact driver to get them out.

I didn't know Vaseline worked on Fuchs wheels - how do you reckon it works ? Presumably, leaving it for more tha 24 hours does no harm - I might do it before I go away.

I assume that it leaves a thin, oil based 'sheen' on the paint; if so, what stops debris (eg. brake dust) sticking to it ?

Could it be that I have, yet again, missed the point ?

Don't know John but I'm interested in trying Vaseline on all sorts of things (on the car) now, I had no idea it had restorative properties on anything but rubber.

Top-Tip can you write this up in the 'Top-Tips ' thread in the SC Register please Jon?

Wow I didn't realise how good it was going to look! And what an unexpected use for vaseline!
The targa bar has been done and the wheels, a one pound tub has saved me a few hundred pound, just got to see how long it lasts.

Thanks for the help everyone.
