Targa Rear Wiper

Hi team,

I'm a new Porsche Owner, just purchased 52plate Targa. And I am very happy!. But the ONLY thing I did not check before buying was the rear wiper. It doesn't work. Any ideas? As to what it could be, fuse, control unit, socket/connector, motor etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't seem to have a separate fuse or relay. If you drop me an email I can send you a wiring diagram, which might help with the troubleshooting.

I spent some time yesterday morning looking at the non-functional wiper on my 996 Targa yesterday. After carrying out some simple measurements (Thanks Richard for the schematics!!) I found all the electrics are fine. With the rearscreen open and the catch tripped the motor works fine.

The problem is the wiper in the glass is Bl**dy stiff which stalls the motor. I filled it with plus gas, then WD40, but it appears that the internal rubber seal binds with the wiper shaft.

My question is, how do you get the wiper shaft off the screen?

So I cleaned the car instead!

I can't find anything in the manuals or parts lists which is any help. Can you take a photo of the underside of the lid where the shaft comes through the glass?

On my Targa the rear wiper is quite free to rotate with the tailgate open

As with most wiper systems thare is a plastic cover over the spindle and nut and this came off very easily with a screwdriver as lever. I suggest your cover may be jammed on as part of the whole problem.

Yea, I removed the cover, the wiper arm, then the rubber cup, then the circlip and washer. But the shaft in the glass goes through a rather second hand looking rubber bush.

If you look underneath the assembly there is a small arm (5-6cm long) with spring loaded pip that locates in the motor disc. A type of Geneva Gear assembly. It is quite clear that the previous owner/garage has had a go at it. I gave it a tap with a soft headed mallet to see if the shaft would come out of the glass, but my bottle went, as I was so concerned about shattering the rear glass.

I am sure that it should push out and assume that there might be a special tool to push it out. Either that or a new rear glass is the other alternative. But please keep the ideas coming!

Still it looks good ;-)

And it DOES look good!

Apparently, Porsche's answer to the problem is a new tailgate/glass. £2100. They don't sell any of the coupling parts - hence why it isn't shown in the manual.

Apologies for my crass input, it did seem like you were asking a very simple question

I notice that in the Porsche list of parts

http://www.porsche.com/uk/accessoriesandservice/porscheservice/originalparts/originalpartscatalogue/

on page 552 it shows a Targa motor and wiper arm, but otherwise shows no specific Targa parts

As Richard says it does seem like its intergral with the glass - just have to drive faster
