Targa recovering

Hi Guys,

As you may or may not know I need my targa recovering and have been weighing up my opttions for a while now, but I just want to finally check my options before I bite the bullet.

My targa leaks and needs recovering (the leaks may be through splits in the vinyl) so I've been looking at various options...

I have a quote from southbound for a recover and refit (not including headliner as its brand new nor any seals) which comes to around £700 with VAT, though I'm budgeting a £1000 just in case (it may need a new rear bar seal). I know southbound are good so i'm willing to pay, but it seem expensive.

I was advised by Top Gear at Walthamstow who had looked after my car previously (clutch replacement, oil lines repalcement and full major service, £3500 total) to buy the parts from Forest Fine and use a contact he knows for around £350 total. The owner of Top gear has fully restored his 964 and recently had an excellent recover, though an email from Forest Fine put a stop to this as they do not have the parts in stock.

Has anybody else used other trimmers or know of any other targa vinyl suppliers?

The targa will be recovered this month and I have a £1000 set aside, though I just want to be sure before I spend this kind of money.

Cheers guys.

( I will continue this thread with some before and after photos once I have decided on my options, to keep in line with the good documentation of works this forum has[:)])

A couple of years ago I spent £400 and a couple of weekends doing this job myself. I replaced the front & side seals and the vinyl and headlining. In doing so have introduced a worsening in windnoise but fixed the majority of the leaks. I still have one which is driving me nuts. A couple of weeks ago after some searching I found a chap called Jack Smith Trimmers (Swansea) who is cheap and has a very high reputation. Although he couldn't fix my particular problem he is certainly able to do the recover etc. He specialises in MX-5s but does pretty much anything. Not sure if anyone else has any experience of this guy that they could share. I know he is certainly cheap and will do the job at a fraction of Southbound, but you will need to source the seals (if needed) for yourself.

I hope this is of help.

I think Sifly does re-trimming....might be worth e-mailing him through his profile.

BTW have you seen the recent Rennlist thread on the re-trimming that Meek has had done on his 964?

Thanks for the info guys.

Steve, I've seen a few threads on Southbound Trimmers and they all look amazing, thats why i don't mind paying. It must be said that what they do is a complete work of art and the retrim in question is amazing! (though not to my personal taste, in the same light nether is the red boxster spyder interior).

I've also seen a few threads on D.I.Y targa recovers, there is a particularly good one on Pelican, but I'm limited when it to comes to craftmanship... VERY[&:]

Incidently I did find another targa cover on FVD, so I still have options.

You can't put a price on good advice, so thanks again chaps[:D]

Hi da_gleadless

I've PM'ed you with some costings.

We recommend any new seals required are fitted prior to the re-covering of the roof and, ideally we need the car here in the workshop to ensure a corrrect fit and finish as our fitter Mark is very fussy (quite rightly)!!

Simon

Thanks.

I'l look at getting the seals done separately, though bringing the car wont be a problem.

I've checked my pm's/emails and nothings come through, can you resend it please.

Thanks

Sometimes e-mails sent through profiles will go to spam boxes because they are preceded with 'xxxx at Porscheclubgb forum'. So check your spam boxes if you haven't seen anything.

Cheers Steve,

I got your email and have received no spam nor PM's... quite strange!

Simon,

I'll let you know about the retrim via phone[:)], though with petrol prices on top your prices are similar to southbound So I'll work out whats best and get back to you. This being said the Mo-hair option is of interest.

Do you have any Mo-hair targa images to add some value to this thread (I fear our PM crisis has spiralled out of control lol)?

Some stunning work there Simon... VERY impressive[:D]

I've booked my car into Southbound for the weekend as it makes more geographical sense (in terms of time and fuel costs), but I will certainly keep you in mind for an other work to be done (RS interior is on the long list of jobs to be done).

Thanks for the photos[:D]

It's gone [][&:][]

getting the seals looked at also and possibly a few other imperfections... waiting for a phone call from David on Monday

With regret I have had to delete a number of posts from this thread.

What started out as and sensible enquiry to other members had become something of a showcase for one members business and, as such, constituted direct advertising which, as we know, is contrary to the rules of the forum at this time.

I appreciate that this probably wasn't a deliberate attempt to gain publicity but was a result of the posters obvious enthusiasm for the work being undertaken.

I hope there are no hard feelings.

Regards to all concerned,
