Targa Rolling Resto

Hi All

I'm after a bit of advice about my car, its good overall but needs a few bits tidying

1 The finish on the black exterior of the roll bar cover has gone a bit patchy, what was the factory standard finish? matt, satin or gloss? Can this panel be removed for painting?

2 The outer rim finish on my 16" fuchs is laquered and not too bad, the centres have gone a bit bare in places. What was the factory standard paint finish?

3 The 2 main front and rear targa seals are in poor condition, wheres the best place to get them and is it straight forward to change them?

4 Water is dripping through the side windowas as there is a gap above the front quarter window, any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Wayne.

Hi Wayne, non of what you want to do is that difficult but get as much practical advice as possible because if you get it wrong the car will look crap and leak. The finish on the Targa roll bar cover is a satin sheen and it is still available, the cover or hoop is best removed with two pairs of hands. It's fastened with one pair - each side - of vertical bolts to be found under the front of the rear wings directly below the bar. Also there are screws holding the seals to the hoop and the hoop to the roll bar. A good Porsche workshop will paint it for you , then fit it back with a mate.
Buy seals from Forest Fine or Southbound. I have used Southbound for several things and found them to be really good. I believe the front seal now has to be modified, seek advice from the supplier on this, don't buy before researching this fully as they are expensive. Once you have the correct sized seals it is easy to change them but they have to be streched a little into position, I'm afraid experience is the best help. The dripping you have is normal, for a well used Targa, it can be cured. The front seal and the Targa roof seal are no longer meeting but you can glue a small piece of rubber to the Targa roof seal (not the screen seal) and it will fix the problem, if you get the correct rubber and cut it accurately, you shouldn't be able to easily spot the repair.
Can't help you with the code of the paint finish for the wheels but you can still get it. Try asking Nick Moss at

Wayne,

Snap! Mine is an 84 Targa and my parcel from Southbound turned up today. Project started as a quick (or so I thought) recover of the top. Currently have everything stripped down and will start putting it all back together tomorrow. I have done the Targa bar myself, etch primed it and then used Halfords Satin finish black paint. This was based on several recommendations. It looks fine so far but have not yet taken it into proper daylight, so will know more tomorrow. The nuts in the rear arches can be removed without removing the wheels, but wheels off will make it easier. I ended buying a long socket as the fore most nuts are a bit difficult to get a spanner on and the bolts are just too long for a standard socket. Some of the self tapping screws require a bit of patience, but mine all came off fairly easily in the end.
The guys at Soutbound are very helpful and they advise that getting the seals right can be a case of trial and error with seemingly small adjustments making all he difference. The seals were changed a couple of times during the SC/3.2 production run so make sure you get the right ones to fit your 84 car.

Good luck with the work and hope the above helps.

Thanks for the reply, I've managed to revive my roll bar cover with back to back and colour magic and it looks ok for now. Any chance of posting some picsof your finished item?
Cheers
