Targa Roof problem

I've got an 83 SC Targa and the roof has decided to start leaking. I've had the car for two years and it lives outside, I've never had a problem until the last couple of months. The water seems to gather in the rear footwells, I've removed the carpets and replaced the rear rubber roof seal but unfortuantly this has not solved the problem. None of the other carpets in the car appear to wet and the inside of the roof & seals are never wet. Is there a gulley that the water may be running down?

Any suggestions on how the water is coming in will be most appreciated.

Don't have a targa but had a similar sounding leak in my coupe which turned out to be the lining in the door panel being split. There is a clear plastic membrane under all the door furniture that must play a vital role in keeping the inside dry. Took 2 years and £500 (eventually) at an OPC to find that out!

Emma the problems for the Targa are very different to those of a coupe. I've recently re-furbished the entire Targa bar and roof and seals so I know this set up pretty well especially after 19 yrs of ownership . You first need to establish where the water is coming from. Sit in the car whilst someone hoses it down that should give you a clue. When you say you replaced the rear seal (the most likely culprit) did you also replace the two side sections where the door glass buts up against the Targa hoop?
Even if the seal has been replaced it doesn't mean it's been done properly remove the roof and check that it has firmly glued into place back and front of the seal runners. Keep posting it can be fixed.

Bones, thanks for your reply. I only replaced the rear seal, thought I'd start with that one first to see if it solved the problem. Will hose the car down over the weekend to see what the result is before I replace side seals.

Will let you know what the result is.

Before you hose it take the roof off stand in the car and carefully inspect the fit of the seal to the Targa bar, the gulley where the seal fits should have been cleaned prior to fitment so the seals makes a waterproof bond. Also make sure the roof is 'pulling' snuggly into the seal when tightened down.

I have had a long running battle with targa leaks which I believe I have finally solved. The last leak took some searching. Turns out water was getting in behind the main targa roll bar seal and then travelling down the inside of the targa bar and interior trim just in front of the seat belt reel. The water then appeared in the rear passenger footwell carpet without ever showing up as a visible leak during heavy rain or when checking for leaks with a hose. Refitting the seal appears to have solved it. One to watch for.
Good luck

Have run hosepipe over car and no water appeared to come in. Haven't got round to seeing if the membrane is in the door panels.
I did notice that the front of the roof on the right hand side just before the join has been welded together, so may not fit as tightly as it should. Any ideas where I can get second hand targa roof parts? I doubt this is the main problem for the water gathering in both rear footwells, but could be one of them.

Emma if you can't see the water getting in and it's in the rear footwells then I think that the water must be running down the inside of the uphostery were the bar is, I've never had a problem with the doors allowing water in though like Julian. I think your problem may lie with the new seals not being fitted properly as I said in a previous post....'Even if the seal has been replaced it doesn't mean it's been done properly remove the roof and check that it has firmly glued into place back and front of the seal runners.....'
Sorry that this doesn't solve your problem, if you live within shooting distance of North M25 I could have a look.
For Targa parts try SOUTHBOUND
