Targa Roof Rattle

New member
Hi
I've been a member for many years and had most models but always fancied a 996 Targa.
Brilliant car and I am well pleased with it apart from the rattle, mainly in cold weather, from the rear tailgate glass.
Does anyone have links to Porsche reworks 3/05 6006 and 6040 of which there are about 3.
Thanks
Gerryg

TSB 6040 (and several others) relate to the regular sunshine roof, so I don't think are of use to you. I have 6006 for the Targa roof. Drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Gerry, Andrew,

Rattling is the price to pay for these fantastic cars but I'll be interested to learn from Richard what the 6006 might be. A lube service quietens mine down. The three roof tips given to me by No.5 in Chiswick were : never motor the roof from cold; keep the drains clear; and only lube with the approved silicone spray. Not done myself as there is ( for a change ) a notional charge to have it done. I understand any other lube attracts dust. Recommended elsewhere is McLube Sailkote.

This is my first post in a year's ownership/membership. Shame I can't seem to get the avatar to show my car. First world problem.

All the best.

Simeon.

ps any recommendations for outside covers? Does the Hamilton offering work well?

Thanks for the tips Simeon, really appreciated.

I will try the silicon spray.

I have actually reduced the rattle down by adding sticky pads in each corner of the inner roof. I saw this fix on an Internet forum from owners that had the cars from more or less new!

I will be interested to know what the 6006 is!

Thanks again.

kind regards

Andy

Andy, Gerry, Vitesse,

Yes, it is - and a swift Google brings up the page to a new roof locating kit, the cost of which suggests a re-build!

Hope I can trust the lube !

All the best

Simeon.

Yes, the TSB describes pretty much a total rebuild. Happy to pass it on to anyone who wants it - just drop me a Personal Message with your email address.

Biggest cause of the rattles and squeezes is dirt and dust under the rubbers. There is a lube that Porsche and specialists use on all the rubbers when servicing., sorry don't have the type/name. Also the felt tape in the strategic spots works as well.

When I bought my targa (for the 2nd time) this January the roof rattled quite a bit.

read about the mclube sailkote on line & promptly bought a can on ebay

the results were fantastic

it also transformed a roof that barely opened into a fully functioning targa again

money well spent

Thanks for the reply regarding Targa roof rattles, I will definitely buy the spray that you have recommended.

Thanks again

kind regards

Andy

I only sprayed the bit you can see with the targa open

dont know if anyone can suggest any panels that could / should be removed to access more of the mechanism

Hi all,

Many other threads on this subject but the one common theme seems to be don't apply to the cables. The other hot tip for the rubbers seems to be Gummi pflege. I have both products arriving tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

Best

Another vote for Gummi Pfledge or silicon spray. Rattles always get worse as it gets colder so the rubber needs conditioning.

If you need to use tape make sure it's thin tape (eg PTFE) and not velcro pads (as another forum suggests). The pads are too thick: when I tried them it stopped the rattles and squeaks completely but... it put roof out of synch causing (more) wind noise and a leak!

Gordon - thanks for your advice on this on an earlier thread.

A specialist has told me to use the roof regularly to exercise it (never said not to do it while cold), operate it on level ground and leave it well alone otherwise! Also said it's best to garage or cover it as the silt from rain can jam up the mech over time. I've therefore bought a half cover, which covers the glass area only. Will report back on what I think of it.

Hi

In your post you mentioned PTFE tape to use instead of Velcro. Is PTFE tape the same as what plumbers use for pipes? Sorry for my question but I am not sure.

Kind regards

Andy
