Targa roof Squeek

Hi

Help

I am looking at buying a 1997 993 Targa and there is an annoying squeek from the targa roof on the drivers side whilst driving, but not at all speeds. Otherwise the roof opens and closes smoothly and the blind works well. Do I need to worry about this? Otherwise the car seems great.

Thanks

Hi

Is it definitely a squeak? I have experienced a small rattle in the past but not a squeak. It was easily fixed. I suppose the squeak could be the result of movement between the roof and the channels or the frame. I have not looked recently but I seem to recall there are little metal blocks on either side of the roof near the front which hold it up in place. The allen screw which secures the roof to the sliding mechanism had worked loose so I opened the roof slightly, pushed it up with one hand and tightened the screw with the other using an allen key. This solved the problem. I don't know if this could be the problem but you could open the roof slightly and see if it moves when you push it up. If it does this screw could have worked loose and is allowing the roof to move up and down slightly as you are driving, thus producing a squeak.

Hope that helps

Tim

David,

Mine squeaks occasionally, but all I do is use some Auto Glym Rubber and Vinyl Treatment on the rubber strip that the front flap on the Targa rests on - this seems to cure it every time (at least for a couple of months). If that's your only problem then you're very lucky!

David,

I should have added... If you're looking to buy the car, a PPI is a must, and it will probably throw up any major problems. However, just in case I would advise that you check the carpets, and crucially the underlays (and foam in the front foot wells if you can get to it) for signs of dampness or water. The Targa roof tends to suffer from small leaks, and over time water can build up considerably inside the car.

Cheers/John
