Targa Roof

Guest

New member
I have just bought a 993 Targa and am thrilled, the 944 is already a distant memory (or will be once sold)!

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but in the rain today i noticed that the rear of the roof panel is dripping both sides, but the running mechanism for the roof is allow it to drain away somewhere towards the engine bay where there is a hole that appears to be for this exact purpose - is this correct, or should the roof be water tight as i imagine? I can see no dampness anywhere?

thanks

Chris

Congratulations Chris, great choice. You may want to look at the rear seal as water should not really be coming through the roof. However, you are quite right, the beauty of the new targa roof (post 964) is that the channels on either side are designed to collect any seepage and drain the water through the tubes that run out through the rear of the car. So, I think the roof is perfectly capable of being water tight but it is not the end of the world if a little seeps through.

Chris,

I had a targa a few years back, and had initial teething problems with seepage and wind noise.

It was cured by having everything adjusted and new seals......... never had any leaks after that even with our summer rain !

I have a targa and I have permanently outfitted the armrests with wadfulls of tissue paper. This is for when it rains, I use the front windscreen squirty things, or go through a carwash. Most of it drains down the runners but a bit leaks straight down onto seats or window/door trim. The roof/windscreen also makes massive windnoise above 100mph, so much so you can't speak to the passenger without shouting. Despite this I love the targa and wouldn't change it for anything, absolutely fabulous car!

You ought to get someone to look at the roof. No excessive wind noise and no leaks when I used to own one.

Great choice of car. Best of both worlds. I have had mine for almost 3 years now and never had a leak. I have had to re align the roof when the 2 of the 4 allen key bolts came loose. I only get wind noise above 100mph so that doesn't bother me as you are concentrating on the road anyway. Check the seal where it meets the rear window and see when the roof is closed see if it looks level on both sides. The seals do shrink over time. I think I might have a manual/instructions on how to align the roof. Will look on my old PC & see if I still have it and let you know.

All,

Interesting point about the seals. I have a couple of small drips from each side of my Targa roof (at the front, though), and was told by a indie that TADTS... I guess not! That and the wind noise are the only things that I can criticise about the Targa.

Can someone who's had it done tell me how much it cost to replace the seals, or whether it's a simple job to do yourself? Thanks in advance.

Cheers/John

Thanks all for the feedback. I did call Silverstone Porsche who told me not to worry and that as long as the drains were not blocked this is perfectly acceptable.

However, interesting comments about wind noise, there is some and before I get to 100! If you do have those instructions Graham that would be useful thanks.

Spent Saturday evening giving her the first clean and polish! I have to say that there was not too much dripping, and none onto the upholstery. Will definately get it checked though.

I look forward to becoming a more active registery member, I never really managed to get too involved with the 944.

Cheers all

Chris

Hi Chris

I have found the info on water entry's & the one Targa top noises! I bet when you open them you wish you hadn't! I just read through it again & wish I hadn't! Hope this helps[:)]

I will email them to you now.

Graham

Graham - any chance you could mail the documents to me as well? I'd like to take a look at adjusting mine to see if I can reduce the wind noise. Although it sounds like it might be complicated...!

Cheers/John

Thanks for the docs Graham. As you say, wish I hadn't looked at them, who would have thought there could be so many places on a roof for squeaks and leaks!!!!!

Hi Graham

As a new member of the PCGB, and a 993 Targa owner (polar silver/metropole leather), I was interested to read the various posts on the Targa roof. I'm planning on getting my roof overhauled as it needs realigning and new seals etc. I was thinking of getting someone to do it but would be interested to see what your diy guide says. Would you be able to email me a copy too? (Let me know if you don't have my email address - not sure how this forum works yet!)

Incidentally, can you recommend anyone who has experience of overhauling 993 Targa roofs in case I decide not to go down the diy route?!

Thanks.

Tris

I had the same and replaced the two felt and rubber seals that are on the leading and trailing adges of the roof section. That did not help!

I then worked out that the squeaking was caused by the glass section rubbing against the rubber seals that run along the side edges of the roof section. By lubricating the rubber (I used a maquires trim finisher) the squeaking was eliminated. The same is true of where the door glass shuts against the rubber seals along the top edge of the glass.

Now the big freeze is over, I was finally able to give this a try. I used some Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care that I already had. Sprayed in the gap between the glass and the roof rails with the glass in various positions and worked it into the rubber with a cloth. I also did the door seals.

....and it all worked pretty well. The creaking and groaning that I used to get when going over speed bumps is pretty much eliminated. May have to repeat the treatment in due course, but its only a 10 minute job.

So, thanks for the advice.

Where are you based? The guy who originally did mine is excellent and based on the Surrey/Hants border. Let me know if that's any good and I'll give you the details.

You can do quite a few adjustments yourself if you're prepared to fiddle a bit. On mine the whistling is usually due to the front deflector being misaligned with the main sliding panel. Does the whistling stop if you push the roof bar (where the two meet) with a finger as you drive along? If so, raising or lowering it as required can have a great effect and is easy to do.

Does the entire roof flap when you slam the door? The whole thing might need adjusting and tightening - again not too difficult. I found that a lot of the adjustment bolts kept working loose on my so I had to Araldite them in place.

Just don't get me started on the roller blind and what to do when that goes wrong...!

Cheers/John
