Targa seals and drain tubes

Has anyone had experience of replacing roof seals and drain tubes on their Targa? Its been raining constantly the past few days and I noticed water on under the rear seat drivers side. There are 4 drain tubes on the rear corners of the glass panel. two of the tubes are behind the cloth which hides all the runners of the frame. The rubber tubes have perished and look to be part of another seal, not sure how to gain more access to this seal.

i have had the same problem - the drains have been cleaned but i still
get leaks - current solution is gaffer tape on the 4 corner of the targa roof !

the seals all look fine and porsche want 900 quid to change them
so i am still thinking about what to do

well I was going to get a quote from the OPC tomorrow. I am going to get a price for the seals first as I'm pretty certain that the glass can be removed intact with its frame without upsetting any of the mechanism. See pics below showing exactly what is causing the leak in mine. Shine a torch in yours and see if you have similar issues.
There are additional drain tubes on either side of the glass panel frame at the rear. Problem is that these drain tubes are part of the lower weather seal which surrounds the whole glass panel frame. I've attached pics of the damaged drain tubes, I think I can tackle this issue myself without upsetting the mechanism settings but need some confirmation.

See drain tube circled. It is part of a seal which runs round the top of the metal frame indicated by the blue bits

This is a pic of the drain tube on the other side. It is damaged too however it is much longer so manages to chanel the water correctly

Can the glass panel and frame be lifted off the car by removing the circled bolts on both sides without disrupting the mechanism? I've gone through the repair manual and diagrams and I believe it can be done

Welcome to my targa mystery Richard. I have looked over the technical diagrams and parts catalogue so many times that I've lost count. The drain tubes you have highlighted are right in the corner of the car and sit under the back screen and come out into the wheel arch. What I have shown in my first pic is what I beleive to be part# 99656245500. The outlet you see in pic 1 is actually what is left of the drain tube which is built into this weather seal, its one part. None of the technical diagrams show this clearly. So these additional drain tubes are actually on the frame for the glass roof and move when the roof is retracted. They are held in the little clip as shown in pic 2. Its a weird design which does put a bit of strain on the tube as it is pulled back when the roof goes back. Trying to get hold of the parts guys at OPC can be a nightmare sometimes so waiting on a call back to discuss price and availibility of this seal.

well I correctly identified the part number as Reading parts confirm that is the one with the drain tubes but the catalogue I have does not show the picture accurately. Price for the seal £223.

Well I tried to tackle this over the weekend but ahd to admit defeat. I was right about about the glass frame as I managed to detach it from the drive mechanism but I just couldn't manoeuvre it out of the car. I didn't want to push my luck so put it all back together and its all working as it should. I decided to test the drain tubes on the whole roof module. I noticed that there was no water dripping out on the side in question so chances are the the drain tube is blocked and water is ending up in the car.

If I remove the rear PU will I be able to see the drain tube outlets so I can try unblocking them?

On a cabriolet, the rear drains exit through the wheel arch, and you gain access by removing the wheel arch liner. On a coupe, the tubes exit at the sides of the engine compartment. I suspect the rear drains also come out in the engine compartment on a Targa, as it looks that way on the drainage plan.

Do you have the instructions from the manual on the Targa roof? If not, send me an email. IIRC they don't show much about the drains, but they show the mechanics of the system.

Hi Richard, I have some good technical diagrams which I downloaded from workshopmanuals.co.uk It tells you what is bolted to what but does not tell you how to renew seals etc.. I'll drop you an email as what you have may shed a bit more light. I was thinking of visiting Tognola's in my lunch hour to see how much they would charge to do the work.

thanks for the PDFs Richard a big help to undersrtand more on this subject. I did two things differently which may have hindered my progress. Firslty I didnt seperate the glass from the frame so this made it quite heavy. Secondly I detached the roof frame from the mounts after lowering the roof slightly as I thought it would give me more clearance at the back but in the manual it states that it should be detached in the fully closed position. Might give it another crack over the weekend
