Targa top

I have a problem that the one of the small metal grips at the front edge of my targa keeps popping out leading to a lot of noise in the car. Has anyone had a similar problem or have advice on how to fix this?

Regards, David.

David the bracket you are describing (I think) is held in by a small cross head screw. the screw locates in a metal plate underneath the Targa top inner liner. It may have stripped , you can buy these still from Porsche or somewhere like
Southbound
ASk for David.

David,

If you are talking about the little curved black brackets at the front edge, you can by replacement ones from www.type911.co.uk. They also list some stronger/longer ones which are supposed to improve the sealing, but I haven't got those so I will reserve judgment. If you get some let us know how you get on[:D]

Thanks for your input. I purchased the longer curved black brackets as suggested. So far they seem to be doing the job, which is excellent. Before, when the old ones popped out, the wind noise quickly became unbearable. But now it is much better.

Steve,
I think Southbound will recondition your top for you (01264 810080), I don't know if they do an exchange service though. However, unless its obviously the top its self, I'd have a look at the condition of the seals and the actual fit of the top. I understand it is completely adjustable.
New seals aren't cheap, but old ones can be rejuvinated (to an extent) by smearing with vaseline, this helps to re-hydrate dried out rubber and also lubricate.

Can't imagine how that happens on such a regular basis. I've never heard of it happening. Where do you live, we could hook up and try and get to the bottom of the matter. The only way I could see it happening was if the retaining fasteners were shot or loose or the front seal had completely lost all it's spring and allowed the top to rattle around.

Mine used to do that if I drove a bit 'fast' and the first time it did it I c@cked myself cos it sounded like I had ripped a hole in the roof [:(].
What it is is the clip has worked itself back. If you undo the two screws slightley on the clip the whole thing will move front to back and left to right by about 1cm. The clip is attatched to a metal plate throught the other side and under the outer vynel (It isnt worded quite right, sorry but if you do it it will become apparant).
Just move the clip as far forward as it will go and this should solve it.

Regarding the Targa Top issue. I have a similar problem in that it does not sit right. It is slightly raised at the passenger side. I have tried all adjustments I can see and replaced seals but I am still no further. If anyone knows of anyone in the North East Area who could help I would be very greatful. I tried a local Targa 'specialist' in Sunderland who turned out to know less than I did.

Hi Kenny,

I have the same problem, and cannot find anything to adjust to better it, also the nearside rear dowel pin has snapped leaving it hanging but still fits in the hole. I cannot find anywhere that can supply one, having looked at all the usual recommended 911 spares sites etc. It is currently in a garage in an attempt to spot weld it, but I really dont hold much hope, and it leaks in heavy rain. (84 targa)

Regards,

Steve

This is not intended to sound smug but I've just driven too and from Cornbury back to Enfield, including ;eaving my Targa standing in losy weather and there isn't even a hint of a leak. When you lock down the roof is there a fair bit of 'resistance' from the seals? On mine there is you can clearly tell that the seals are being squashed and actually sealing. Before you rush out and buy new ones they can be persuaded to 'plump up' by applying a liberal coat pf vaseline. Ideally this should be done in warm conditions so the Vaseline becomes more easily absorbed by the rubber. If any members with Targa leaks live near the M25 Essex ' Herts borders you are more than welcome to pop over and compare roofs/seals.
Kenny ask your Reg' Sec, if he can recommend someone in the area, you found out the hard way there are many 'experts' out there.

Hi Bones

I plastered 1/2 pot of vasaline on the seals during the summer, and they are in pretty good nick - its just the **** top that the pain. It locks down ok at the front, but as Kenny says, it leaves a lip that makes for wind noise at speed. I'm sure that my rear dowel that has snapped is why I'm getting leaks from it ill fitting at the rear. Any advice welcome!!

Steve

Sorry Steve without seeing it that's all I can do, wish you luck though. I think the frame is die cast (cheap aluminium) therefore little chance of a result with welding.

Hi Bones,

I've done quite a bit of work to try to improve my targa (added thinker, rubberised clips at the front to successfully reduce wind noise, built up the worn frame at the front with epoxy to improve the clip fastening & reduce wind noise, added old cycle tyre inner-tubes to the side seals to reduce the gap between seal and window!!!) but still have a small water leak.

The resistance I get is good when I clip the roof on, but I think water is running down the channel between the two pieces of rubber and into my car!!

I live in Herts - any chance of meeting up for your opinion?

I live in Herts - any chance I could
