Tasty looking invoice - S2

After 3 months of S2 ownership I finally got a chance to sit down and thumb though the wedge of paperwork that came (very pleasingly) with the car. There is loads, the majority of which is proof of routine servicing & mot work etc. I did however find an interesting invoice from "˜Camtune' (see below) for some cylinder head work etc (£2k+ worth of parts alone - just look at the price of those cams [:D]).

I was just wondering what people think would have been the issue? I was thinking perhaps the head gasket failed and then when they took the head of they discovered some other issues. You will note a £120 charge itemised as 'cylinder head repair', anyone's guess I suppose? The car had done 75k miles when the work was carried out, seems a bit low for new cams etc, not that I'm complaining [:D] Also, I assume the work was undertaken under some kind of warranty, as there is no labour charge on the invoice? I'm just hypothesising really as I could just call up "˜Camtune' and they might be able to fill in the blanks "" just thought I'd share.

The good news is that although the work was carried out a few years ago, the car has not covered a huge amount of miles since! Hopefully this means the engine will remain in good health [:)]

Looks to me like either cam chain connecting the 2 camshafts together or cambelt gave up. Bent/replaced inlet valves mean something hit something.

I've seen invoices for parts-only, as it was cash for the labour to save some VAT. Not suggesting Camtune would ever do this of course, just that I've seen it from other garages.

I agree with Craig...that invoice is 99.9% due to valves hitting pistons.....I don't think this was a cambelt failure though....the fact that it's had new cams, etc on top may be the slipper failed or teeth lost on sprocket . thus cams out of sync, bent valves and any other damage caused...

That's really good news for you - and shows that the major achilles heel of S2's has been addressed on your car

An occasional check of chain / sprockets / tensioner wouldn't go amiss though.. it's very easy to remove the cam cover

Thanks for the advice. I do have a very slight weep from the cam cover gasket so will check out the chain & tensioner etc when the gasket gets replaced. Its recently had new cam & balance belts plus a new set of rollers, so she is in pretty good health (I hope[:D])

I think I'll take the cam cover gasket replacement on myself, I've done the job before on previous cars. Its funny, I wouldn't have batted an eyelid doing the job on former cars, however, I seem to have some sort of mental block with this car as it's (my first) Porsche, haha! I need to stop being precious and get stuck in!

Doing a number of jobs on a Porsche is fairly simple if I am honest. Some jobs are quite arduous admittedly, but many are fine. A lower arm change for example is a very simple job on a 944 compared to other cars.

Don't worry about it being a 25 year old car or a Porsche, I've had three and you can do most things pretty easily

I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
