Question: The temperature gauge is showing the engine as overheating but this does not appear to be the case, the gauge also fluctuates when the indicators / windscreen wipers are used. My garage has diagnosed the fault as a problem with the voltage stabiliser but seem unable to obtain the necessary part. Has anyone else had the same problem / know if the voltage stabiliser is built into the temperature gauge ?

Ceri,

It is always comforting to know others are in the same boat when a problem arises. I suffer the same fluctuations on my fuel guage which moves in time to my indicators. I can have a half tank of petrol apparently disappear whenever I make a turn !!! I have yet to trace through the problem as I am looking at other things at the moment but I am going to have a full service, MOT and Exhaust at the Porscheshop in Halesowen next Thursday (7th August). I reckon I will be spending a good few hundred pounds on my old beast (924 Turbo 1980). I will take your question along with many of my own and see if I can tease some " free" diagnostics from them. I will let you know if I get anything useful.

Both these issues sound like they could be symptomatic of an earthing problem - very common on 924s. If it' s happening on an individual instrument it' s worth removing the instrument and checking all the connections on the back. The earth connections to these instruments are often a bit dicey, and replacing the earth cable certainly won' t do any harm.

If it' s happening across a couple of instruments on your dashboard, it may be a main dashboard earth. Repairing these is not too difficult but can be time-consuming. You should be able to find information on earthing issues online - I remember reading a couple of really helpful articles, but can' t locate them right now. Unfortunately Haynes isn' t massively helpful on the matter. Drop me an email if you would like me to dig those articles out.

Cheers

Thanks to everyone for their input, it' s fixed and running well [:D], only a disconnected earth lead - so no expense involved (v. good news ) !!
