teledials

Hi all,

Question. Does anyone know if 16'' teledials from a 944 work ok on a 928 with regards to 'offset'?

Thanks

hi,

yes offset, the measurement from the inside rim to the fixing point of the wheel to the hub I believe! This is a bit like the blind leading the blind.

cheers

Offset is usually stamped or engraved into the wheel and is measured in millimetres of 'ET' [ET is the short form of the German word 'Einpresstiefe' which literally translates as 'insertion depth'] Positive Offset wheels have their mounting face toward the front face of the wheel. Most front wheel drive vehicles have positive ET wheels. Eighties and Nineties Volkswagen wheels are usually ET38.

Zero Offset wheels have their mounting face even with the centerline of the wheel and are by definition "ET 0". Negative Offset wheels have their mounting face toward the rear of the wheel - powerful rear-wheel drive cars often have wheels with negative offset.

Regards

Dave

If the wheels are from a post86 944 they will probably have an offset of 55mm, if from before that they will be ET23 or 17. The first lot will physically fit on a 928 but strictly speaking you should be fitting 928 teledials on the front with an offset of 65mm so you don't affect the scrub radius of the wheels (this was explained to me but don't ask me to repeat it -- in a nutsheel the scrub radius helps you keep the car going straight if you are forced off the road and have one wheel on grass and the other on tarmac...)
PS I was going to add that you should maybe join the 928 mailing list if have a 928 -- very useful but can be busy at times -- 928.org.uk

thanks gents,

i'm going to ask the seller if there is any info stamped on the wheels.
nothing's simple is it.

cheers

et number stamped on wheels is the same front(7j) and rear(8j) : et52.3
What would be the consequences of fitting these wheels to a 928 S2

They'll fit but be 12mm further inboard than wheels of an equivalent width:

And the scrub radius will be wrong.

hi Paul

I appreciate your help on this, it's an education. I guess 12mm (or close to) spacers would work to maintain the original setup as I'm keen not to alter things too radically.
Trouble is using the 1010 wheel offset calculator you kindly pointed me towards seems to suggest the 'track' would be wider rather than narrower as you have suggested, is this because of positive as opposed to negative wheel offset?

Regards, Jon

I didn't mean to put you off -- the wheels will fit ok as 12mm isn't much wider. There are technical reasons -- see above-- why you shouldn't fit them but I've seen a lot dodgier combinations than what you are suggesting on several Porsches, including probably, the rear of my own 928 S2 which has 17" 9J/55mm Design 90s and a spacer that only just fit under the wheel arch.
