Temp gauge issue

Morning all, my car has just developed an unusual symptom with its temp gauge, or should I say it's new to me. I'm suspecting either a faulty connection in the cluster ( it was after all in pieces recently) or the temp sensor itself but before investigating further, I thought it best to put it to the collective in case someone else has had the same issue.
I only noticed this yesterday and considering I drive by the gauges I'm fairly confident that this is when it started. One thing to note, the car had been under a cover for a number of days to keep the heavy rain out which we have experienced lately.
Ok, so symptoms...the gauge will read normally at just above the first mark, after a while, the needle will go up to just above the higher ( second white mark) but not into the red and then come down again. At first, while driving I thought that perhaps the first stage of the fan wasn't working and thus the heat rose until the twin fans kicked in to bring it back down to normal. The car didn't feel like it was getting hot and I couldn't hear the fans kick in so I monitored the gauge more closely. I noticed that when the needle dropped, it didn't come down as one would expect, that is at a controlled pace, no it just drops instantly.
This makes me think it could be a bad connection in the cluster but before taking that out to check I thought that I would put it to the collective in case this has been experienced by someone before and it's not the cluster or temp sensor, bad ground perhaps?

Over to you guys then, thanks in advance...

I had similar problem but the fans seemed to run OK - well that was because I had AC on which forces fans to run. Turned out to be temp switch in the radiator which controls the fans if AC is not on. Note that it did get hot enough to cook the tiny o ring in the small water pump spigot which started leaking with a small but powerful jet of coolant.
Standard problems actually fairly easy to diagnose one you realize how the temp switch and AC interact with the fan relay. Again the simple fix probably the one...

Hi Bruce
Thanks for the reply, I'm pretty sure that it's not the fan switch, I have had that issue a number of times over the years and this is nothing like that. I think it's electrical but haven't investigated yet, as I said the needle seems to rise as one would expect, but when it drops it's not normal at all. The best I can describe it is it's the same as if turning the ignition off, it just drops like a stone from above mark 2 to the normal reading where it should be at just above mark 1

Pete, was it ok after replacing the heater matrix?

or is it just after having the dash in the washing machine

Morning Martin... it was great after replacing the matrix, in fact, it sat at the correct level for the first time since the matrix got blocked 6 years ago, I put this down to the extra coolant volume now in the system.
It has been fine since, until Sunday that is, the only thing that has changed in between fitting the new matrix and the problem is me covering the car over the last week to protect from the heavy rain forecast. I'm thinking that perhaps the multi-block in the cluster has come dislodged a little, I know that one of them has a broken clip but can't recall which? I was also wondering if it could be the temp sensor playing up which is the main reason for my post to see if anyone else has had something similar.

BTW, did you ever hold that meet at the Museum?

Regards

Pete

not yet Pete, but I think south Mimms is on again, this Sunday 10:30, if not p155ing down,

the plugs are available new if you need to replace, they unclip and open up the side so you can swap all the terminals over.

944 612 311 00 £17.50 per plug

Not sure how covering it up would affect the gauge

Just in case the Sun is out Sunday, what was the time we used to meet at Martin? alas my mind is terrible these days, I recall that we have a 2-hour window to fit in hence why I'm double-checking, I think it was 11 am but just can't remember to be sure...

Cheers

Pete
