Temp gauge

I am after a bit of advice please before I contact the garage. Driving my C2 on Sunday I noticed that the temperature gauge was creeping up to the 90 degree mark. As it was a cold day and I hadn't been sitting in traffic this was unusual. When I got home the gauge had climbed higher, to about 100 degrees, however the engine definitely wasn't running hot. I turned the engine off and the gauge stuck at about 90 degrees rather than returning to 'zero' as it normally would. I turned the ignition on again and the gauge went up to almost 120 degrees before jumping around a bit, then when I turned the engine off it again stuck at about the mid-point. I am thinking that this could be the thermostat or sender unit? If so how much should I expect it to cost to replace? Thanks.
 
Sounds more like the temperature sensor to me. The sensor (for a 3.4L) is £15.63+VAT, and 1/2 hor book time to change. (Plus coolant top up). There are two outputs from the sensor - one for the DME, and one for the gauge, and it sounds like the gauge part is faulty. If it was the output to the DME you would have got a flashing light in the temp gauge. A diagnostic check would show if the DME signal is the same as the guage reading, and if it isn't then it will definitely be the sensor.

If it is the thermostat, they are £31.97+VAT, and 1 hour book time, plus coolant refill/bleed.
