Simon, thanks for reply, i may be a simpleton!! but the black square thingy is that where the needle needs to be around???

No, its just a slightly poor representation of the cars gauge, which adds the missing temperatures. If you click on my link itll take you to a very helpful site. As stated, closer to 80c would be expected.

The needle seems to be where the black block bit is all the time!! Got the feeling its not working...!! Speedo is a bit sticky as well, my car goes from 0 to 30 in about 1 second.
I've heard the clocks in later models are a bit iffy, is this correct?
Regards,
Ian.

Not really.

If your temp needle does not get out of the thick black block at the bottom of the gauge (40-60 degrees) then something is not right with yours. As your speedo needle has a problem as well I would suspect the connectors on the back of your instrument pod. It is very simple to remove the pod, clean up the connectors with electrical spray and then make sure the connectors are re-fitted properly.

Take another look at Clarks Garage, specificaly the first part of the Dash Removal procedure:

With everything working properly your gauge should read around 80-90 degrees, if is still a bit low then it could be your thermostat on the water pump is opening too early and keeping the car a bit too cool
