Temp warning light!

Ok so I'm "pottering" along on a bright sunny day and .. cloudy bit .. I notice to the top right of the temp guage a red flashing light!!!

Temp reads ok. I'm nearly home so I carry on.

Get home. Temp reads ok. Water level in radiator is ok. Think hmmmmm....

Go off to my local garage and guru (as far as my cars are concerned!!)

But!! The light doesn't come back on!! Typical!!

Go for a spin down the dual carriageway .. not sure if I want the light to come on or not but it doesn't!!

So what do I do?

Any ideas people?!!?
 
Just "one of those things" like my occasional random appearances of battery and oil lights for no apparent reason. Keep an eye the temperature, see if it happens again.
 
Mine used to do it occasionally after a good blast, but since fitting a new reservoir and cap it hasn't happened since. What was the frequency of the flashing light? The manual says this:

Four functions of the coolant warning light:
1. Engine coolant level too low
"” light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)
2. Engine compartment temperature too high
"” light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)
3. Engine coolant temperature too high
"” light is lit; pointer on the right
4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty
"” light flashes rapidly (1 Hz); pointer on the right

Note
The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously
 
Agree with Richard and I think its a common fault. Mine did it occasionally for years, always after a good blast. Gradually got worse until the the diagnosis got down to expansion tank cap & bottle being replaced.

Mine has done this as well but you have to drive it very hard. As soon as you switch the engine off the light goes off as well. OPC told me that this is quiet common.

Phew I can breathe easy again then!! I just know I wshouldn't be saying that!!

Richard....Thanks .. I was going to sit and read the manual but being lazy I thought you lot would answer it for me!! Cheers guys!!

Ummmm .. Flashing slowly I guess!!

I think I might go check the water level a few times or keep a close eye on it anyway as at cold it was on minimum!! Then hot it was ok!!

I might be able to offer a word of warning-I had an identical symptom in my boxster- warning light flashing and levels appearing in order. I was paranoid there was a problem and examined the car closely to see if I could locate a leek etc. I stripped the upholstery out of the boot (boxster remember!) and discovered residue of coolant immediately below the header tank. I could see no leek though. I took it to my local indy 911 Sport at Horncastle. Phil looked at it for me and said I was lucky to have spotted it so early- the header tanks are contructed in 3 chambers and where the moulding joins they have a tendancy to split- early warning signs are pin hole leeks with minimal loss of fluid. To make it even harder to detect they only tend to leek at certain tempertures owing to expansion. The tank had to be replaced, parts and labour in the £700 region I think but a catastrophic split would have been far worse out on the road. Might be worth having the system pressurised to negate this problem, it was'nt a cheap fix particularly when I px'd for a 911 the next month! Fingers crossed for you, it could just be a quirk but better be safe than sorry!
