Temperature gauge sender unit

I have had a 1990 S2 for 5 months now and the temp gauge has never worked. The fan seems to kick in so i have not really worried about it.

I have been advised it is probably the sender unit, but where is it and how can i check it or get a new one, are they expensive?

I'm pretty sure on the S2 motor the dash gauge sensor is in the same place as the 2.5L. Go to Clark's Garage (google it, and save as a bookmark as it is a great site) and there is a picture of the top of the motor and the gauge sensor pointed out.

It is not very expensive, I think I paid under $30 USD for it last year.

As far as I know, this damn sensor does little other than send to the dash gauge. There is a seperate sensor for the DME signal as well as the thermo temp sensor mounted in the left radiator end tank - this is the one that kicks on your fans due to coolant heat in the radiator.
