Temperature readings ??

Guest

New member

Hi everyone, this time, i am after some info regarding temperature ( engine )

My temperature seems to increase very easily when driving in town, or even idle.

Now, that high temperature seems to cause hot start problems with my 944 lux. 84

Does anyone have suggestions to keep in control of temperature ? ( a part from keeping 6 foot from the car in front in traffic , it works, i know, i do it, just like in F1 races under safety car LOL )

And what temperature should be read normally on a 944, do those car have a tendency to heat up ??

thanks every1 ( and thanks Oli for ur ime )

This is not normal - you have a problem with the car

Fan not working would be my first guess if it's OK on the move. Does the fan run after you've turned off the engine?

Check that before worrying about the really nasty stuff.

thanks for your suggestion

indeed fan works properly. After driving long distance, it will blow for 10 mn approx

Could it be that the cooling system is full of air ?? Im saying that coz the previous owner didn't treat it right and i suspect he never bleeded the cooling system when toping up. ( im saying that coz i can't even localise the air release screw I'm supposed to unscrew when changing cooling liquide, so i suppose hhe just topped up with bothering with air releases)

what do you reckon ?

thanks

Do you mean you can't find it, or can't open it?

yes, air locks are a possibility, as is a poorly functioning rad, stuck thermostat, headgasket....

try www.clarks-garage.com for troubleshooting.

Hi, mine does something very similar, and if you look on the 944 online forum, you'll find that most people on there suffer the same issue....

I also asked my local 944 breaker, and he confirmed that such behaviour is normal...

My car will run at about 1/4 on the gauge, but when idling it will heat up very quickly until the fan cuts in at around 3/4, the temp then drops down to normal and the cycle starts again...

The reason for this is that there is a lot of engine in a relatively small space, and no engine driven fan, also, it is an old design of engine....my old mercedes used to behave in a similar fashion

Also, mayo in the filler neck is no indication of a blown headgasket, as condensation will cause mayo, especially on our cars that have a very long oil filler- if you are concerned about a blown head gasket, check for white smoke from the exhaust, bubbles in expansion tank, or oily, brown water in the cooling system

As long as the fan kicks in, then you should be ok...

your temperature sensor in the radiator may not be very accurate (they have a wide tolerence ) it could be switching your fan on too late allowing your engine to overheat for a short while. It might be worth replacing it as it is a relatively cheap part.

Your thermostat might be faulty and not operating at the correct temperature. There are I believe two differant temperature thermostats available in the UK . The last one fitted by my garage was high which allowed the `normal' temperature to rise to halfway which was a bit disconcerting . A cheap easy replacement .

The other things to look at are all your water hoses. Squeeze them when they are hot Make sure that they are all have rigid walls that don't easily colapse when they are really hot. Particularly top and bottom hoses .If your heater works properly it is unlikely that you have any significant amount of air in the system and in any case you would definitly hear it gurgling around the system even with the engine running

Check that your oil is not getting too hot. Make sure there is clear airflow over the bottom of the radiators and it is not getting blocked by anything.

Uninpeded airflow through the front grille and over the engine and out at the base of the windscreen is crucial. Thats all I can think of for now .

GUYS

thanks a-lot

ALL that info was very useful.
Im replacing my oil tomorrow. ( for less friction i guess, and to be on te safe side.)

regarding coolant, no gurgles in the system, maybe the fan kicks in a little late so i'll go in that direction. ALTHOUGH i couldn't AT ALL find the air release screw in order to refill radiatotr etc... )
IS THAT an issue ... [&:]

And yes it's a lot of engine in a small space. ( i emptied my radiator yesterday, and what came out didn't have any oil in it. ) No leaks on engine block, seems healthy. )[8|]

This temp problem seems to cause hot start prob when driving over an hour in medium traffic, parking the car for 10 mn. Then sometimes it doesn't start. wait 20mn start straight away... that's why i posted this topic regarding heat but my main issue is that hot start problem. ( i wonder if it could be the starter ? or an other electrical device )[&:]

thanks anyway

The hot start issue could be the DME Relay because I was reading an old magazine article recently where someone was having that trouble with there 944 and also mine did too but mine would cut out whilst drivng as well so it might not be but it's a start anyways could also be a fuel sensor problem too.

Thanks John, I will keep that in mind.

I do think I should orientate my investigation towards electric problems, I thought maybe the solenoid stuck when the engine, thus the starter might be hot...

keep postings guys, any info is useful.

Thanks.

( any1 knows a cheap and cheerful way to turn my car into a 250 bhp beast ?? ) [:D]

THese guys from Norway are a true inspiration, what they did is simply amnazing:
