Tempreture guage 944S2 CAb

Hi Guy's,

Picked up my new 944s2 cab over the weekend (first 944), the only think I wanted to check was that the tempreture guage never left the 1/4 mark, the first white line off the cold. Is this normal? Are both cooling fans meant to come on at the same time or does one come on when warm and the second when hot?

Many thanks

My S2 only really gets to the 1st mark while moving, goes a little above when stopping in traffic. IIRC the fans are supposed to come on one, then the other. Someone who has a better memory than me can confirm/deny this.
Its more than likely the thermostat is the original so the spring will be a weak with age. I think the gauge should peg half way myself and plan on replacing the thermo.... when I can be bothered. Maybe when I change the oil. I can wash the expansion tank out then too [:D]

absolutely correct.

Both my Lux and my two 944S2's ran with the guage on the first white line. In traffic or a jam it occasionally would rise briefly to half way or so before the fans cut in and brought the temperature down to the first mark. It would then stay there forever.

There are two thermostats available for Europe. If you fit one for colder climates the temperature will then stay at about the half way mark in temperate climates like the UK . In colder Scandanavian countries the same guage will keep the engine temperature at the first mark.

Buying a new thermostat is a lottery unless you speciffically request the correct temperature.

Both Turbo and S2 cars are fitted with two fans as standard. Both fans come on simultaneously however they run at two speeds and the radiator temperature sensor has two temperature settings. When your temps rise very high the fans will speed up

Welcome to the forum by the way and congratulations on your excellent choice of car

Normal running for the engine should be around half way up the gauge or just below but certainly above the first mark.. Inevitably like most 20 year old 944s the thermostat or stats have probably never been changed. Get these done and you will see normal running temperature. Under normal operation only one fan should be enough to regulate water temperature in our climate. The second fan may kick in during a traffic jam or other static running. Turbos and S2 have a different themostatic switch to other 944s due to the dual fan arrangement and aircon, which was standard on turbos. Can't stress enough about getting the stats done otherwise your engine will never reach proper temperature and will run cold.

Rob I have to take issue with your statements.

S2 and turbo cars are fitted with 2x fans as standard for a reason.. Think about it.

The fans certainly do not and have never run individualy they run together and have 2x speeds

Your car may run at half temperature guage but they didn't when new and they shouldn't now. Your thermostat has doubtless been replaced in the past with the incorrect spec unless your coolant system or engine currently has an overheating issue

S2 and Turbo cars do indeed have a 3x pin radiator sensor but that is because they trigger the fan speeds at two different temperatures because these engines potentially run a lot hotter than a Lux or 944S

see also http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=403&mpage=1&key=temp,gauge&#403 with new stats my turbo sat at 80 with the original stat a bit below, still feels pretty hot under the bonnet!

For what it's worth, my Turbo 250 has just had a new thermostat as part of the general mechanical renovation that Hartech have done for me, and the temp normally sits just above the first white mark. If running very slowly or stationary for a while after a long run it will go a little higher, the fans kick in and it comes back down. Only time I have seen it go higher outside town / traffic lights is going up Sutton Bank at 20 mph in 2nd stuck behind a queue of caravans!

(Edited for lousy typing, which I never spot until after posting...)
