Tension Straps and replacement roof

Just had my car in the OPC for my first RMS replacement. And the obligatory new clutch of course !

But I had mentioned to them that the roof kept popping out over on the passenger side and there was a lot of road noise coming in on that side too. They diagnosed that I needed a replacement tension strap to cure the problem.

However, just got a call from them saying that the channels that the straps runs through is damaged and that in fact I need a replacement roof. Has anyone heard of this happening before ? It seems a bit extreme to part with over 2k euro to replace a roof where the fabric is lifting a bit. I know a few people have posted in here that they had the same issue with the fabric of the roof lifting and that it was easily fixed.

Anyone got any advice ? or any idea where these channels are so I can see them for myself ?

Alan,

I'm not sure about the tension straps, worst case scenario.....if you do have to replace the whole hood... search the forum you will find links to compays that replace the whole hood for less than £700 in England. I would think it would also be available for approximately the same in Ireland?

There arent any 3rd party hood places in Ireland - but wales isnt that far away - perhaps that pre 03 glass windowed roof mightnt be a bad idea. The problem is that by the time you change over from sterling to Euro, add in ferry and accomodation costs - it doesnt really get a whole lot cheaper.

I'm going to have a talk with the place where I bought the car - it wasnt an OPC, but I do have 3 months left on my warranty. The sales manager there and I arent really seeing eye to eye on it - he's already covering the RMS and the clutch, but feels that the roof is just a small cosmetic issue.

I think the guy I bought it from is really regretting the deal.. I part-exchanged a 944S2 along with another car for this one. His mechanic took it home one night and snapped the cam chain - thus requiring a rebuild and new head. Plus a new clutch had to go in.... Put that with the 2k bill for the RMS, Clutch and various trim pieces....and now a new roof.... Thank god I'm not a car salesman :)
