Test Drive Plus - 987 S

Hi guys

Thought I'd share my experiences on the Test Drive Plus I undertook the other day. It was in a 987 S as I have one on order to replace my 2.7 (in the pic you'll see my Lapis 2.7, the 987 demo and the 997 demo).

The instructor drove me in the 987 to the site of our test which allowed me time to appreciate just how far Porsche have moved the interior of the car. It is far more luxurious, better finished and certainly better styled than my prefacelift interior. I also found the ride very smooth despite being on 19", but the best bit for me was the deep, bassey rumble from both the engine and the exhaust. On the way to the track, the instructor demonstrated the one touch hood while we were on the move which made me contemplate the misery of having to do the chop on my plastic window!

We arrived at the track "" part of a disused US air force base in Suffolk, set aside to Porsche for the day. The surface was damp, slippery concrete, and the bit of track we were using was twisty and uneven, and surrounded by miles of flat innocuous looking wet grass.

First up, he took me around and I thought I was going to loose my breakfast. The cornering forces in the wet were astonishing. The most dramatic demonstration was on a long right hand bend where he held it at around 90 mph, and then just stamped on the brakes. The car came to a swift halt following the exact trajectory without deviating off the line (amazing for me as my car doesn't have TC).

I then took over and did a variety of exercises "" accelerating and braking with 2 wheels on the grass, getting on the power with and without the TC, using the throttle to adjust the car's attitude in the bend, getting the tail out with TC turned on, that sort of stuff, and then ultimately, a few laps of hooning about for the hell of it.

I did spend a fair bit of time looking out of the side windows on that bit! It was such a great experience "" gunning it down the straight, braking hard, ABS kicking in, down the box, then back on the gas, into the corner, more gas, tail twitching, then straightening, full throttle, red line, change, red line, change and then brake again"¦. It was just amazing "" I was truly taken in by the whole experience.

If you get the chance, you must give it a go. Total safety and burning up someone else's clutch, brakes and tyres! By the way, if you are buying an ex demo Boxster S from OPC Colchester"¦..

[8D]Sounds like some serious fun was had there and I shall keep a look out for the sale of one low mileage gently run in 987 demo car used for only a few local test drives :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

So, do you have to have placed an order to qualifying for a test drive plus?

I don't think that there are any set rules - you've got to convince them that you're not on a complete jolly, so maybe suggesting that a Test Drive Plus may persuade you to put a deposit down will do it. If that's the case, you may as well suggest that you can't descide between a 997 and a 987 and have a go in both...

Seriously though, it will definitely increase the safe enjoyment you will get from your current motor.

Check the underside for grass, bits of twigs, mud and the odd rabbit! [:D]

TC works on acceleration not braking.
