Test Drive Plus

Just completed Test Drive Plus with Porsche Instructor. Standby for comprehensive write up in PP. Found 997 Handles better than C4S. PASM is worth the loot. 997 is worth the loot viz a viz C4S, partly due to PASM, but perhaps mainly due to wider front end, bigger boots & wider front track. What we tend to forget is that the fabulous C4S has just a normal 996 front!

Derek, look forward to the report.
Your comments are interesting, I can see the 997S advantage on track where PASM offers you two cars in one, the sport mode does rather endow the 997 with near GT3 levels of suspension settings/handling. But this is (for me anyway!) too firm for the road, so if you don't do track days how does the "S" in standard PASM settings compare handling wise with a C4S, can't see there would be much in it, although the 997 clearly has a power to weight advantage. Interested in your comments.
Just as a matter of interest below are the track/tyre comparisons between the two, for what it's worth the C4S does actually have a wider front track than a standard 996Carrera (by 7mm) although clearly, as you say, no where near as wide (at the front) as the 997.

Track
C4S F-1472mm R-1528mm
997S F-1486mm R-1516mm
Tyres
C4S F-225/40ZR18R-295/30ZR18
997S F-235/35ZR19R-295/30ZR19

For track days I used to run my C4S on GT2 front wheels, if I recall correctly these had a 5mm bigger offset than the C4S/Turbo wheel so in effect increased my front track by 10mm.

On Corsa's never had any probs on the track with lack of turn in, only time I had understeer was sometimes through and after the apex as my slow in fast out driving style gets me on the gas very early in corners.

Unfortunately I've now sold the C4S so I next year I will not be able to compare my car directly with a 997 on track. I have to say my old car with the 345bhp power upgrade and on Corsa's was pretty quick.

So Derek will we see your car on PCGB days next year, I'll happily give you a spin in my MK2 GT3.

Regards

Hi Grant,

Thanks for the message and indeed the data. I found the 997S smooth & quiet on road in normal mode. Much better than 996 targa, C2 or C4S. True, in sport mode it is a little hard, but the beauty is that it softens up automatically if you hit the rough stuff.

Hi Kevin,

Yup, will be on track. Thanks goodness I don't have the 70 kgs of glass roof to lug around anymore! Talk about centre of gravity! On another note, I look forward to using the Sport Chrono package; not just a pretty (or naff) stopwatch. It does a great deal & when I find out exactly what it does I'll burst into print.

Derek,

Once the calender is announced I'll mail you with the days I'm doing and hopefully we can organise so I can get a ride in the 997S.

See you soon and best regards
