Test drove a 993

I went and had a look at a 993 today C4 and well I wasn't that impressed!

Is it the six speed that makes it feel a tad slower or could it be the car just was a tad slower then my 964 C4

I wanted to be amazed and convinced that it was the car for me and then I would stretch my money and make the deal.

But i just couldn't see were all the extra money was going.

Don't get me wrong the car looked lovely, same colour as mine Midnight blue but with a black leather trim and so silky smooth to look at.

Anyone have experience of driving 964s and 993 back to back?

Not put off I'll try again later

Why would you change ? Apart from the 'improved' rear suspension ,which won't affect 'normal' UK driving, and the reduced engine maintenance , the main change is the 'look' ..... and it will be an expensive update. The 993 drives a bit quieter and a bit smoother than a 964, but if thats what you want then go straight to an early 996 which is becoming a bargain .

I like the look, quiter ride inside long distance, air bags, sorted motor by porsche, round lights, this one has less miles etc. Just a better car.

996 nice (dont like the lights) not so reliable, but not for me and yes its an expensive update, hence the comments on the thread.

964 still great and grin factor 11 out of 10.

I had two 964s followed by two 993s, all bought new, and I felt that the 993 was a significant development. IMO the 993 had better ride, handling and usable performance. Mind you it took me a while to get used to the 6-spd box after years of 5-spd 911s.

I must say that in 964, 993 and 996 guises, I have always preferred the C2 variants.

Also, although the Varioram models are regarded as more desirable, I've heard several people say than they prefer the pre-Varioram 993s.

Thanks for the advice Oliver its good to get that from someone who has done it!

I just got back from the garage and they rec the Vario was the one to get, different strokes etc

Two 964's and two 993 from new mate! Wow thats going some, what do you do for a living?

Johno,

There was a time when I got a new Porsche every two years, and used them as my everyday transport. Nowadays I'm a bit more conservative.

I meant to add that the a good 996 is a great car. I had initial reservations, but it is superb for everyday use.

However, IMO, the best Porsche, £ for £, is the Boxster S. There are some really good used examples around for well under £30k and they really are teriffic fun and surprisingly practical.

Of course it's not a 'real' 911, but it is a 'real' Porsche.

oliver,

I agree with you (then I would) but does £ for £ come into many P buying choices?

Do you mean a "real" 911 must be AIR Cooled? :ROFLMAO: like my 4 previous examples were. And when Porsche went the water route I then switched with zero regrets to
the "best sports car" in the world and IMO the best sports car Porsche has made to date [8D]

Yes.

Certain ingredients went into the 911s up to 1997. Then Porsche changed the recipe.

Nothing against the 996 - fabulous car. 997 probably even better. But I've held onto two of the earlier 911s (from '73 and '88) because they are unique and, when my children grow up, I want them to know what a 'real' 911 was like.

The £ for £ issue is obviously important to people who have a fixed budget. For someone for whom money is no object they might choose a Carrera GT. But, is a Carrera GT ten times better than a Boxster?

I dont like rag tops Porsche or otherwise, when I want wind in my hair and face I go out on the bike (BTW it kicks ass)

I would like to test drive a 996 but dont like the styling! the 993 has it all for me and I like the quirkyness of the air cooled, its different and I like that part to.

As i said the 997 looks great, a modern car but with old style round lights, but way way off my budgets.

Oliver you didnt say what you did for a living, its cool if you would rather not just curious as to what i would have to do to get a new Porsche in my life every 24 months.

There is a good article on the 996 in the latest GT Purely Porsche, which provides a pretty fair assessment of the 3.4 996, and the 3.6 is even better.

Johno, I used to work in the City, but I gave that up and now I've got a farm. Still enjoy Porsches though.
