Test of Knowledge - Unknown Gearbox Item

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Hoping this will stretch the grey matter.. anyone have any idea what this is/was?

Had the gearbox drained and filled with Swepco 201. When drained unknown is this little fella that popped out as well. Ollie at RPM Technik had no idea either. Gearbox feels fine with no undue or unusual noises. Not sure if this is maybe some kind of square tab washer, roughly 15mm x 10mm with what seems like a 5mm hole (may not have been original dimensions).

Thought for one moment it may be a driver dog or 'stone' as the katalog describes it - but it's not the correct size and thickness
[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"]and doesn't have a lug[FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"] when checked against the workshop manual. Maybe the tab washer or 'lock' [FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"] in the diff [FONT=verdana,geneva"][FONT=verdana,geneva"](item 20 or 33, illustration 305-00 in the katalog). I'll ask Ollie if there's anything similar on a diff in the workshop..

Any help more than welcome. Not unduly worried but will listen out for anything - although for all I know it could have been there for years..

Hi Marcus,
not a nice thing to find in the drained oil for sure.
It looks like it is sheet steel plate therefore I would exclude gears and casing.
On the 1st image the top right above the drill hole looks as though it's fashioned around a shaft as though some sort of clamp arrangement to hold a rod in place, like a selector.

As I've not had a gearbox apart on a 964 I'm clutching at straws.

I guess that as it's not causing a problem re gear selection nor ominous graunching sounds so hopefully not of serious consequence.

Best of luck.

[FONT=verdana,geneva"]Thanks Dekker,

A small puzzle this one..

I spent today at Silverstone on the full F1 circuit with instruction from an ex-GP2 guy now a Porsche Cup champion (Asia series). The old motor was full on and I never seemed to need to get out of 3rd gear at all except for 2nd at a couple of turns with the new in-field layout. The gearbox was fine without any problems at all - although it has to be said a smooth 3rd to 2nd on that G64 box is so clunky and totally useless when hot - very hard work. Still, it all stayed together so I still have no idea if that little piece of sheet metal is anything to worry about..
